Mild take for the day: All videos players (looking at you YouTube) should have a waveform on the timeline to allow easier skipping to specific parts where the audio track noticeably changes. As seen here in Amberol, which is music player, but the idea is the same. #UX #UI

Oh @_bapt_@mastodon.social is working on a proper service manager with dependency tracking and process supervision for FreeBSD. Service definitions use the UCL format already used elsewhere on the system. The project is called `rcd`: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-hackers/2026-June/006427.html After using launchd on macOS, then systemd on Linux, and now dinit on Chimera LInux I think this model is definitely the way too go. (I'm aware SMF on Solaris pre-dates these, but I've...

An inquisitive Butcherbird swooped down from the trees and observed us having lunch. It was no doubt hoping for an offering, but left empty-handed. #WildOz

I had a very exciting sighting on my walk tonight: a Sugar Glider! :awesome: Something flew over me, which I thought was a bird or bat, but then it scuttled up a tree and peered back at me. We've heard their call but never seen one before. This is the first I've ever seen in the wild. #WildOz #SugarGlider

How is this an actual UI in an operating system shipped to millions of people‽ If anyone knows how to turn off the stupid banana when viewing images in the Messages app on Android I'd love to know. **Edit:** Trying the Right Messages app as a replacement for Google Messages. #Android

My reward for getting both our printers working on Casuarina today. No thanks to Xprinter (my label printer manufacturer) for distributing their driver as a rar file with a .deb inside. Which meant `rar` -> `deb` -> data.tar.xz -> finally PPDs and filter binaries. That was fun to package. #CasuarinaLinux

I patiently awaited the arrival of Fedora 44, as they had put work into a better out of the box experience on Snapdragon X ARM laptops². I tried it over the weekend… and it didn't work. First I had to discover that you have to manually edit the kernel command line in grub¹ to have any chance of it booting, but even after multiple attempts it never got further than a few systemd boot messages. So the Yoga 7x goes back in the corner again. ¹ https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Snapdragon_WoA_...

Re: https://bitbang.social/@CursiveHello/116487007762641142 I like what GNOME Console (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/console) does with the cursor. It blinks for a few seconds after movement ends. Then stops blinking until something moves it again.

In Nov 2024 a popular cafe in town closed due to increasing financial pressures, culminating in "a significant rent hike". The space they were in has remained empty to this day. I hope the greedy landlord is happy with their actions. It brings me a bit of dark satisfaction to know they have received zero rent in that time.

TIL that Exif metadata is actually well-formed TIFF and as a result can use big or little endian (because TIFF supports that). https://binspector.github.io/blog/2014/10/13/big-trouble-in-little-endian/ Also explains this output from `file` too: `Exif Standard: [TIFF image data, big-endian, direntries=12…` More info https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exif#Technical

@jmmv Re: I think AI is pushing me toward the AGPL > does the “friction of modification” need to be replaced by the legal friction of the AGPL? Not sure it matters. People will just use an LLM to launder the AGPL code to whatever license they want. cf. the recent "rewrite" of the Python chardet project from LGPL to MIT https://github.com/chardet/chardet/issues/327

If you have a ThinkPad X1 Carbon of some variety, does it support S3 sleep? There might be an option to enable it in the UEFI (Sleep State > Linux, or Modern Standby > Disabled). If so, what generation of X1 do you have? #ThinkPad

RE: https://fosstodon.org/@balloob/116398481380578311 Huh, I thought Mozilla's position on this was negative, and it was. However, that was revised to neutral in 2024 https://github.com/mozilla/standards-positions/pull/959 And then an implementation was opened for review 2 months ago https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2010930

Oh nice! The developers of Little Snitch have made a version for Linux. Like they say at the start of the post, I never found an alternative I was happy with when I switched from macOS to Linux. Although, with vastly more open-source software in my workflow it was also less necessary. https://obdev.at/blog/little-snitch-for-linux/ #Linux

My Jaycar multimeter that I only bought 20 years ago (/s) has developed LCD cancer. I used it fairly recently and it was fine then. It had a good run, and probably only used two or three 9V batteries in that time.

I just tested the IceWM 4.0 update on Chimera. I have a fondness for IceWM as it was the first WM I ran on my work computer in my first job out of university. Great to see it still seeing new releases. Here it is running on my little loongarch64 box. #loongarch #icewm
