RE: https://mastodon.social/@Snoro/117019979060288178 The image shows that the farmer has been working hard at desert-building for a few years now. They must be pleased with all the subsidised hedge removal, soil-carbon depletion and agrochem residues they've achieved.

@pocketvj pleased to meet you love "turn off the internet and start doing something now!" I just come in out of the heat every now and then, or for a break. Like now. Suspect you come in for a warm-up, or are checking your pmos phone while out? I have a bit of an issue following you, as CJ.social hides a lot of fosstodon.org bcs "fascist apologist admin"... like I dont see thumbnails of images or your avatar. Hoping the slow full-size image loading will f...

How the UK trend for turning front gardens into driveways is adding to night-time heat "Impervious surfaces including asphalt (which many driveways are made of) absorbs heat, raising ground and air temperatures. They both absorb up to 95% of incoming solar radiation during the day, reaching surface temperatures of 50-55°C, compared to 27-32°C for grass or tree-covered areas. " Obvious - but you know #carBrain https://theconversation.com/how-the-trend-for-turning-front-gardens-int...

@tante@tldr.nettime.org then there is also the tension between human technology and all other life forms, even if the *intention* of the creators of that technology is benign. I'm enjoying more and more giving other lifeforms the benefit of the doubt and minimising the tech. Or using the tech to minimise the tech. Like outdoor illumination that responds (gracefully) to human needs, not blitzing night creatures all night. No not the floodlight that flashes 50 times every night when the cat w...

For my whole life, the "boomer" generation has been "_kicking_the_can_ down_the_road_" at best, if not outright obfuscating and denying their culpability, led by the fossil fuel heavies. Some are still at it worse than ever... Might-makes-right believers don't "get" living lightly. Tomato seedlings, mostly 3rd-generation-saved Couer de Boi, are germinating here in several different locations. Even some outdoor cloched ones have come up due to the few recent 25 deg C afternoons, but they wont be liking the current 7.6 C ambient. The pictured ones (indeed this whole post) are here bcs they've been indoors for nights, and are currently under my high-brightness desk magnifier right by my elbow, at just under 20 C, the threshold for decent growth. Can't reall...
