Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering
Graz University of Technology

Full professor for biomedical imaging and head of the Institute of Biomedical Imaging at TU Graz. I do systems engineering for magnetic resonance imaging. In particular, I work on the low-level real-time software that controls the behavior of nuclear spins at nanosecond resolution and on the numerical algorithms that compute images from the acquired data. I support open science and free software. Opinions are my own.

Today I ran a model checker (cbmc) on a sudoko solver to prove memory safety. Certainly a toy problem. But now I know my sudoko solver is verified to be written in memory safe C. Who knew this can be so simply? (I do not expect it to be that simple for real programs, but the underlying technology for sure is mature enough).

I can now confirm: Emergency cell broadcasts do work in spain! It would be nice if they weren't exclusively in spanish though... (edit: not -> now.)

I can't buy a train ticket with Deutsche Bahn because "my browser acts like a bot". Would be nice of something just works for a change.

Trying to avoid using any google account on my new Android phone... Let's see how far I can withstand. The Google lock-in is at least as bad as the Microsoft lock-in of the past. Quite a pitiful situation.

ISO C Meeting: So it was decided that three more UBs will be removed from the C standard (#11, #18, #71), const variables of integer types initialized by an integer const expression become named contants (n3693), we want the elvis operator ?: (n3804), and also various wording clarifications (in particular: discarded). And defer is on its way to becoming a TS. (edit: and also bitints are now allowed as underlying type for enum)

I am switching all my projects to Rust. Or C++. I haven't decided yet. Build times are a major motivation. Although we tried with macros, C is simply not able to keep up in this regard with these more modern languages. Also it is impossible to build proper abstractions in C, so it will never be possible to implement complex software such as a kernel, a compiler, a sophisticated editor in C.
