I'm going to be honest: this is a _terrible_ idea before the midterms (which, let's face it, are likely to happen rigged)

Yes, it's accurate. Although I enjoyed using Ubuntu (iirc started with 5.10 or 6.10) due to it's friendliness to newcomers, Canonical is on the business side of Linux distributions (think Redhat). Debian (which Ubuntu is derived from), is privacy friendly and leans heavily towards the open source ethos imo. With that being said there's tons of options out there. [Distrowatch](https://distrowatch.com/) is a great place to window shop before grabbing a live .iso :)

Lots of disingenuous comments in this thread regarding the change being "just json" considering they're already on a warpath of implementing id verification. They are testing the water to see what they can get away with. Furthermore, the Linux community has always been against shit like this (see: systemd outrage, open bios, gnu etc).

Pretty wild to see them this brazen. They _really_ don't want citizens to have access to encryption of any kind. What's the tipping point?

I was fired a month or so after the intentional stock market crash. Jobs are no longer existent, likely to be worse than 2008. Most of us can't afford a home let alone rent for an apartment. Medication is expensive even with insurance, and that's assuming you can even obtain it as the fda/dea are in some sort war causing shortages. Our government is killing people. Our friends are being put on lists/into databases for being queer. Our government is threatening our allies, resulting in th...
