Half the fun of having a ebook library is being an ebook librarian. That means fetching and improving metadata, building collections, normalizing author names, etc. Pretty much digital tsundoku, but also actually reading the books. #books #reading #librarian

Well, I’ve been completely oblivious to any GitLab news but by the look of my timeline I guess they went all in on AI?

I self-host services at home, but I don't want to expose my home IP to the world. I also don't want my server to be hammered. So I rented a cheap VPS and installed HAProxy as a front to expose my home-hosted services, and I can manager my cluster exactly as I did before. https://ergaster.org/thoughts/front-server/ #homelab #selfHosting #kubernetes

Posts auto-deletion is such an underrated feature of Mastodon. I’m not the same person I was one, two, or five years ago. Heck, I’m not even the same person I was a month ago. It’s easy to post whatever crosses your mind, and I’m glad Mastodon makes it easier to timebox it.

People are slowly realizing that Android only weaponized open source licenses but was always meant to be a captive platform, like people are slowly realizing that VS Code has open source code but is a captive platform. Open source licences are not enough. They’re regularly weaponized as a tech enthusiast trap.

Whether it is my Kobo or other ebook related projects, almost all have stats and goals, a feature you can’t disable. I read to escape the world. I read to travel to parallel universes, to futures that may not exist. I read to go an adventure. I have enough KPIs and goals in my life, I don’t want productivity measurements in my downtime. #books #reading #kobo

RE: https://mastodon.social/@Mastodon/116402716327956884 You know Mastodon are good people because Trust & Safety improvements are on top of the list when they get more than €600K in funding. The other big news are their plans to specify how instances will be able to share services, called FASP. And €90K will be shared with other projects to make sure FASP is not a Mastodon-only feature. Good people working in the general public’s interest. Also kudos to @sovtechfund for funding it.

I’m looking for an illustrator for my blog! If you can make simple, decluttered banners like the ones on my blog (hand drawn, no background), please send me a DM with a link to your portfolio and your rates! 🔄 Boosts welcome https://ergaster.org/blog/ #illustration #commission

I think I’ve put my finger on why the discourse about AI on Mastodon grates me. All the posts I see do nothing but reinforce the feeling of powerlessness. All leave me wondering “and what now?” Does anyone write about the geopolitical implications of it? Are there groups organizing to think about how to improve the situation? I think we’ve had our fair share of rants against AI, they’re not helping anymore.

You apply a deployment on your cluster, the pod crashes, you describe the pod and everything seems fine. You’d need to have a shell into the container, but you can’t because it has already crashed and exited. Today I learned that Kubernetes can let you create a copy of the pod and give you a shell to troubleshoot it https://ergaster.org/til/kubernetes-crash-shell/ #kubernetes #homelab #selfHosting

RE: https://floss.social/@gnome/116330461750922709 We can’t afford not to have GNOME when Big Tech already has so much influence on our lives. If you can afford it, give them the financial force to build systems that work for all of us. #bigTech #sovereignty #linux

RE: https://androiddev.social/@MishaalRahman/115849772521760098 It’s worth repeating. Android is not a viable base for an independent or even just collaborative operating system. Android is Google and only Google’s project. If you want to see an actually transparent, international, and collaborative system on phones, support @postmarketOS #android #opensource

On the fediverse we could do collectively better at not shooting down initiatives. It’s a bit demoralizing to see someone announce their project, only for a mob to come and tell them they’re wrong and they should never have started it. I’m not saying we should accept the unacceptable. I’m saying we should embrace imperfection to go in a better direction.

TIL that Helix and Typst are a match made in heaven, thanks to the Language Server tinymist. https://ergaster.org/til/helix-typst-match-in-heaven/ #helixEditor #typst

Some see the end of Sora as the end of LLMs in general, and I don’t think that is true. Sora was expensive and not remotely useful or engaging. It wasn’t monetizable like YouTube. It pains me to admit but some models like Anthropic’s can sometimes be useful. They’re widely used and some people pay money for them, admittedly at an unsustainable price. The end of AI has been announced for years. It remains possible that the bubble doesn’t pop but slowly deflates. This is not me praising AI.

I can understand why devs who understand what they’re doing and who review their output can be tempted to use LLMs to speed up some work. But C-suite people getting high on AI will tank some companies in the next few years.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@haeckerfelix/116342975055276289 This Week in @gnome is a superb resource to discover gems like Wildcard, the local regex explainer app. @haeckerfelix curates the community entries on his own, and publishes them on the @gnome Foundation infra. He single handedly built the website and the bot to curate reports. Massive props to him for that!

The @gnome Foundation has created a program to fund direct contributions to GNOME, especially on the maintenance side. This is excellent news, and it will make people who "only want to fund development" happy. I also wanted to highlight that GNOME is first and foremost a community. A community that often ends up producing code, but that needs much more than a git repo to do so. https://ergaster.org/til/gnome-fellowship/ #linux #gnome

Somehow, it was simpler and cheaper to install a touchscreen, display an image of a finger touching a circle that contains a fingerprint, print a label that says “please get a ticket and go to the waiting room” than… just putting an obvious physical push button.

RE: https://floss.social/@gnome/116285045391826432 This is a testament to the GNOME Foundation's ramp up in maturity, and that GNOME folks have their heart in the right place. 1. Use donations to fund people working on GNOME and dependencies. 2. Focus on sustainability and not bells and whistles. This is entirely fueled by our donations. If you want a direct pipeline between your money and GNOME development, this is it. #gnome #linux #sustainability

Mozilla announces more AI in Firefox, still failing to understand that at this point their market share is made of tech savvy people who do not want that. Mozilla, please. Stop chasing the fads. Get your own values. People use Firefox to get access to an open web, use a sturdy browser, and not to be tracked. Build in that direction and that direction only. Nobody from your current user base will recommend Firefox with AI to their friends. https://blog.mozilla.org/en/firefox/ai-window/ #fire...
