So the "I left $AILab for ethical reasons" grift is starting up: https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/2026/10/openai-safety-team-resignation/688881/?gift=jE7sd3rFOqDdQaD53F1IhcqkhImekiWN9aB9R67GhAo I understand wanting that bag, wanting to be in on a big thing. But if you thought OpenAI or Anthropic were okay a year ago or so, I really am not willing to give you any credit for leaving now. Like how much fucking money did you make and how much did you sell your book (that will of...

There was this consensus of not going to X after Elon Musk turned it into a right-wing hellhole but I see more and more especially journalists going back "because the AI people are there". Yes, because the "AI" folks mostly agree with right wing talking points because that's what the whole idea of "AI" is build upon. That's a bad argument for relegitimizing X.

Researchers analyzed the epistemic diversity of LLMs (meaning: how many different positions/kinds of information do they produce for a given input). Result: "every system is less diverse than a search baseline. This gap is not uniform: RAG can improve diversity, while large models are counterintuitively less diverse than smaller ones. Moreover, LLM parametric knowledge systematically reflects English over local-language knowledge for country specific topics." https://arxiv.org/abs/25...

The only threat to humanity that "AI" represents is as the producer of increasing amounts of CO2, e-waste. As a massive polluter and destroyer of our ecosystem. Everything else is just bullshit.

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@david_chisnall/117358990093685067 100%. The whole "terrorists can use an LLM to build a bomb" is a dumb movie plot threat. If you want to hurt people, lack of knowledge is not your problem. And nobody needs to develop a new chemical to do terrorism. All you need is readily available. This is just "AI" labs creating imaginary issues to distract us from the real harm they cause.

"So what’s the AI artist paradox? It’s that by either having or lacking intelligence, AI-based art generators preclude the existence of so-called “AI artists”. The EU AI Act forces you to label a lot of AI generated content like images or video or text - mostly as a way to fight mis/disinformation. For images for example you do not have to do that if they are just illustrative illustrations but you have to do it if anyone could mistake it for something real (like a generated picture of a person). I kinda wonder how that applies to code (software). The code is not illustrative but functional and "a person did it" carries a lot of weight in...

Open Source hot take: A software project is allowed to be *done*. Not everything needs to add features or rewrite things. You can just be happy with functionality and focus on just maintainance. "Maintenance mode" is not always bad but can just show a mature product.

Omarchy is part of new fascism. But it's also a good case study about how little political resilience is built into FLOSS: The libertarian roots have not only made the whole movement ready for the taking by corporations but also by fascists. And sadly many influential organizations in that space are not up to the task for putting their foot down.

How a laxer "AI" contribution policy ruins a creative project environment: "caustic, antisocial behaviour causes people who previously were valued in the space to leave. When these people have left, the behaviour of the persons whose caused them to leave becomes the new community norm" https://blog.fallible.net/it-breaks-a-village/ (via @davidgerard@circumstances.run who I can't quote ;))
