If you believe that "ai" makes you 10x (or 50x!) more productive, what this tells me is that you are utterly useless and I'd be better served hiring or working with just about anyone else (though ideally someone with critical thinking skills and an interest in actually learning things).

Steam Machine software recommendation (if you have video content you want to play off of the filesystem or local servers): Kodi TV The default UI (it's themeable) is simple, tasteful, and unobtrusive, and it has been able to play anything I've ever thrown at it without issue, and also conveniently grabs metadata from various online sources. #SteamMachine #KodiTV #SoftwareRecs

If the goal of people who use miserable ai slop "illustrations" or start their article or blog post with shit like "In the age of AI <something>..." is to get me to immediately close that browser tab and never return, I can report they're succeeding quite impressively.

This writeup on the technical underpinnings of The Incident at Galley House is a really enjoyable read. Lots of neat details on the pipelines and tooling they developed specific to this fantastic narrative game: https://eviltrout.com/blog/2026-07-28-building-galley-house/ (It's a great game and you should play it if you haven't yet.) #Gamedev #TheIncidentAtGalleyHouse

Okay, I dump on bsky a fair bit... I mean no edit feature (still), it tends to really mangle images when recompressing them, it has an obnoxiously low character limit, it's not *actually* federated in any meaningful way, etc, etc... but today I uploaded a video and they now let you upload soft subtitles (vtt format), which is an awesome feature that I wish Mastodon/Fedi (and other platforms that let you share video) would adopt! #Bluesky #Mastodon #FeatureRequest #Subtitles

The Fighting Game Glossary is a fascinating world of genre-specific jargon. I've never really interacted with fighting games beyond a few minutes of extremely casual (and ineffective) play here or there over the years... so this is all new to me and fun to explore... https://glossary.infil.net/ #Gaming #FightingGames

The "Grimoire Edition" hardcover of Witch Hat Atelier is a really nice book. Very nice paper, printing, and binding. The second and third volumes are planned for August and November this year, at which point that'll cover the first 9 original manga volumes. (14 published in English so far of 16 published in Japanese, and the series is ongoing). Oh, also, Witch Hat Atelier itself is absolutely fantastic. Amazing art, layout (look at photo #3) and storytelling. Read it....

Dear "slop code is fine but 'ai' art and writing is terrible" people, with all sincerity, go fuck yourselves. Slop is slop and it is indefensible garbage no matter what it's used for. "Slop is fine so long as it's not the slop for the thing *I* care about" is some impressive bullshit.

Is there a site somewhere tracking software that's remaining "AI"-free? Be it the original projects sticking to human authorship or forks made to preserve/maintain non-crapified versions? I should have bookmarked those vim preservation forks I saw recently.

RE: https://chaos.social/@swetland/116508080517766176 Remembering that PC Hack was an essential educational tool for young me learning to program in C. Sadly, the 360K floppies and fanfold printouts of those changes are lost to time, but I did find the original PC Hack 3.61 sources a few years ago and stashed an archival copy in a github repo, just in case: https://github.com/swetland/pc-hack #Gaming #NetHack #PCHack #C

All the breathless "AI is the future, you're being left behind" bloggery and linkedin posting reads to me like "you see, *my* skill is taking the request from the customer and giving it to the machine, which is why I'll have a fruitful career unlike you idiots who actually know how to do things", which is sort of equal parts hilarious and sad.

https://engineering.block.xyz/blog/18mb-of-hashmap-overhead The real question here is why in the world did someone decide to implement an array of 16 floats as a hashmap in the first place. The next question is, now that you've reduced it to a 64byte array instead of 792 bytes of hashmap and related goop, should be "how many of those 24674 arrays are identical?"... that's still 1.5MB (not counting heap overhead). I'm realizing just how alike many of the "AI coding" enthusiasts or evangelists are to the people who think "AI art", being able to push a button and receive soulless regurgitated slop (be it writing, imagery, animation, software, whatever) is the future. That "art", "skill", "creativity", any investment of time, learning, practice, etc is some kind of gatekeeping conspiracy. Believing "h...

Grr. I really should just do simple linear scan register allocation with the dumb pass-everything-on-the-stack ABI to start with, but I keep trying to map out how "do it right" with a more realistic pass-by-registers ABI, etc. The desire to solve the whole problem "for real" is fighting with the desire to get a basic implementation working first. Ideally I'd leave things in the argument registers as long as possible *and* avoid spilling to the stack around function call...

@whitequark Intriguing. Any recommendations for compatible servers and clients? If session persistence is a thing now, that feels like a real step forward for IRC (having to use a bouncer or a client running on a server somewhere is a high bar for a lot of people, especially more casual users).

Anyone know of a collection of "interesting" little code chunks or algorithms for exercising compiler code generation, optimization, etc? Ideally stuff that's not too big (worst case a few functions, 100-200 lines of code or so), and has interesting code-flow properties, uses more than a handful of registers, does something computationally meaningful, does not depend on IO, (standard) library code, etc. Source in C/Go/Rust style languages a bonus. #Project #Compiler...

A reminder that you can still just sit down and write software. Or stand up and write software if you prefer. The key point is that *you* can *write software* and you don't have to let other software write software for you.
