I like roasting chicken in my dutch oven because i get so many meals out of it - a week’s worth of roasted veg & chicken pieces then another week of chicken and wild rice soup using the broth and meat scraps and then potatoes later with the drippings.

Sold something for $40 on fb marketplace and described it as having problems A and B that cannot be shown in photos and can be fixed with repairs C and D, but that do not actually impede its use. Person purchased and picked up in person where problems are immediately noticeable with the least inspection/interaction. However it was a porch pickup so i couldn’t draw attention to the problems at pickup. Now receiving very angry messages about being a liar and selling garbage. Sigh sigh sigh

RE: https://mstdn.social/@GeriAQuin/117181322926975109 It makes me pretty annoyed to see this because actually Carney has been doing a lot of cuts that impact science, scientific jobs, and universities.

One of the bittersweet things so far about my 40s is seeing, on average, how much happier and functional women i know are after divorce while the men fall apart. This isn’t every couple by any means, but it is an ugly pattern. So many women i love have sacrificed so much of their lives and selves for nothing. So many men have never developed skills to really build and sustain relationships - or even learned basic housekeeping and nutrition. Like i thought this would die with the boomers but...

RE: https://mastodonapp.uk/@MarkHoltom/117195433854017894 This is not at all true. People use chatbots to search now because SEO and the ad funded internet meant that for a very long time now a Google search got you the second and the chatbots give you the first.

Over and over migraine papers confuse cause and effect re: personality traits and behaviours and increase stigma towards people with migraine and the actual psychological difficulty of living with it. Like dude, people with migraine don’t get migraine because they “have tendency to hypercontrol.” They’re controlling because sticking to regular routine and managing stimuli are literally standard recommendations for reducing and managing migraine attacks. Oh you think I’m pathologically harm av...

Something crawled up my pants and bit the heck out of my calf while i was gardening today. ouch then and itch now. But mustard and kale seedlings are out with fresh compost and some fertilizer in the kitchen garden. I’ll add mulch after this week’s rain. On the tropical terrace I’ve added ajuga, acidanthera, and some cyclamen coum i started from seed 2 or 3 years ago. Still lots to get in the ground, but that’s enough for today. #gardening

If they cared about the children they’d be going after the engagement algorithms or better yet targeted advertising. Not doing age verification.

The rains appear to have stopped so early this year that the water barrels didn’t have time to fill between last frost and water restrictions. And there’s no snowpack. It’s gonna be a rough one. #gardening

It feels weird to me how cautious people are about ticks. I might spend a little time researching how out of step my attitude is with the evidence now that ticks are becoming more prevalent where i live now. I grew up on farm in North Carolina and checking for and removing ticks was something we did basically every night in summer. I’ve had hundreds of tick bites - once i stepped in a deer tick nest and got more than a hundred in a day. I knew lots of people who got Rocky Mountain spotted feve...

Statistics problem: what are the odds that two contractors who say they’ll get back to me “next week” text on short notice saying they’ll be there within an hour of each other on the same day and then they’re both late but show up at the exact same time and are annoyed with me about it?

After using the arthritis gardening gloves for a month, my hands are doing so much better. If you have arthritis and gardening hurts your hands, I highly recommend Bionic Relief Grip gloves. They make them in men's and women's sizes. https://www.bionicgloves.com/products/womens-bionic-reliefgrip-gardening-gloves I had a little trouble finding where to buy them in Canada but found them here (where they are now sold out of my size 😩 ) https://forzasports.com/products/bionic-womens-rel...

The extent to which shit we put in space is for direct and indirect military reasons is hard to get across to the average space nerd. I wish it weren’t so, but it’s for real and part of why nobody is doing jack about the satellite situation except writing whitepapers and experimenting with disabling other satellites.

A USian friend of mine has decided to take a trip to north Ontario in May. Hiking, hunting, camping. They should have paid more attention to the warnings from the north. https://www.nfb.ca/film/blackfly/

I really hope the rains aren't done yet. It's been such a dry spring here that I actually irrigated today - and I should have been irrigating once or twice a week for about a month but just couldn't believe I'd have to start this early. #gardening

I think a lot of RMTs undermine the effectiveness of their treatments by so heavily clinicalizing their practice to distinguish themselves from the spa/bodywork practitioners.

I do not find it encouraging that in a lot of cultures elders are super invested in future generations and in ours they’ll do just about anything to avoid paying one more cent in property taxes.

Thanks to @debcha , today I read the record of a literary geography expedition - mysterious and beautiful and joyful. https://wchambliss.wordpress.com/2026/01/27/the-green-chapel/ It made me think of my own experiences of literary geography - none so magical as what Wayne Chambliss describes, but still important memories and experiences for me where the threads of stories that lie in a tangle of lessons and feelings are stitched into a landscape I can walk with my own body and follow with my...

One of the things travel reminds me of is how many people spend such an incredible amount of their time in poorly ventilated spaces. Do you have any idea how much better you'll feel and think and sleep if you live in rooms with CO2 400-600ppm instead of 800-3000ppm? Also, have you ever tracked the CO2 in your car? You're probably doing something incredibly dangerous with remarkably reduced cognitive capacity.

If you’ve ever worked on a search engine that gives little supportive warning messages with links to resources when searches look like someone is experiencing domestic abuse or at risk of suicide, thank you. These messages have saved people i love.

Even when Canadian governments do the right thing, they do it as badly as possible. It is infuriating. Today, BC announced that we’re going to stop doing time changes (good) but stay on DST (bad). You don’t have to take my word for it that DST is the wrong choice. Here’s basically every organization that thinks about sleep or circadian rhythms on the topic: American Academy of Sleep Medicine https://aasm.org/advocacy/position-statements/permanent-standard-time-is-the-optimal-choice-for-heal...
