seeing yet another person say basically "I know I need to leave github, but I can't right now" .. a talk title came to me: "look for the exit nearest you". This hypothetical talk would be full of actionable ways to reduce the eventual costs of leaving an online service, even one that seems heaven-sent today. Because we sure keep being fooled about the shiny new service, thinking it'll be just as good forever because who would deliberately ruin it...

Lots of weird dreams last night but the one I remember was: I was sooo excited about the new group I was working with. They were such retrocomputing fanatics that our online chat was UPPERCASE ASCII ONLY LIKE IT'S 1978 OR SOMETHING

Time to wreck things! I have a Pi 4 with Octoprint, based on raspbian 11. It frequently nags that Python 3.9 is outdated... so today I'll do the "not guaranteed to work" updates from bullseye->bookworm->trixie via apt. I also finally got out one of my spare tasmota AC relays so I can power switch the printer & lights off when not in use...

Hey #NYC people. Can you advise me on whether it's reasonable (in terms of personal safety for a lone masculine person) to walk about a mile at around 2AM in the Times Square area (specifically between Hotel Martinique on Broadway & Hyatt Place New Times Square as shown on the map) .. and if not, what would you do -- call a rideshare? I'm a reasonably confident traveler but I'm seldom out this late anywhere I go. #askFedi #boost4reach

Where in the world are the early reviews of the #Prusa3d #bondTech INDX toolchanger? I know to take such reviews with a tablespoon of salt, but I'm really surprised there aren't a raft of youtube videos out there from folks who got shipped early units by Prusa specifically so there would be video reviews out at the same time the thing went in the store. Of course, since Saturday it also went back out of the store reportedly due to selling through an initial production run. #3dPrinting

Oh! oh! micropython has had pre-commit checking of commit messages, but a regular prek install doesn't enable it! Now I'll make those mistakes much less often

@pathunstrom so I'm using a slightly modified dykes in this 6800 computer simulator with a line-based terminal UI. Compared to what I mentioned in that PR, I started using my own parser instead of shlex. Now, I'm wondering if there's any pathway from this to tab completion in python's readline ... if you have any thoughts I'd love 'em. @dataclass class TakesAddresses: addresses: list[Symbol] @cmd("b") @cmd("break") class Break(Takes...

@Njord I wish there was an ethically trained, locally usable diffusion image model. A couple of years ago I was very much into using SD to generate images to use in TTRPG, mainly character portraits. It was nice that I could do this locally, and using no more power than if I fired up a video game on my PC. In reflecting on that today, I think what was actually useful about it may have been the effort of writing the prompts. Seeing the image served as some kind of confirmation that what I was...

@mhoye @silicatefondue @jonathankoren this class of algorithm is called the stopped clock algorithm. It joins the previously identified Monte Carlo and las Vegas algorithms.
