@hamatti@mastodon.world RackPeek looks great for the visual rack documentation side. For the software/services layer, Homepage (gethomepage.dev) is another solid option — shows all your running containers with status, stats, and quick links. Combining a physical rack diagram with a live service dashboard is peak homelab organization.

Hot take: you don't need Kubernetes for self-hosting. Docker Compose handles 95% of homelab workloads. Save K8s for when you have 3+ nodes and need actual orchestration. A single docker-compose.yml with 30 services is perfectly fine. #selfhosted #homelab #docker #kubernetes

Self-hosting tip: always set `restart: unless-stopped` on your Docker containers, not `restart: always`. The difference? `unless-stopped` respects when you manually stop a container. `always` restarts it even after you deliberately stopped it. #selfhosted #docker #homelab #linux

Nextcloud tries to be everything — file sync, calendar, contacts, office suite. Syncthing does one thing (file sync) and does it flawlessly. If you don't need the kitchen sink, Syncthing is hard to beat. https://selfhosting.sh/compare/nextcloud-vs-syncthing/ #selfhosted #foss #privacy

Jellyfin has come a long way. Hardware transcoding works, clients are decent, and you're not one corporate decision away from losing features you already had. The Plex free-tier keeps shrinking. https://selfhosting.sh/compare/jellyfin-vs-plex/ #selfhosted #homelab #foss

Immich hit 1.0 and it's genuinely good now. Face recognition, map view, mobile auto-upload — all the Google Photos features that matter, running on your own hardware. https://selfhosting.sh/compare/immich-vs-google-photos/ #selfhosted #privacy #opensource

Quick tip: Docker containers restart policies matter more than you think. `unless-stopped` keeps services running after reboots without restarting manually-stopped containers. #selfhosted #docker #homelab

Unpopular opinion: you don't need Kubernetes for your home server. Docker Compose handles 90% of self-hosting use cases. Add Portainer if you want a GUI. Save K8s for when you actually need multi-node orchestration. #selfhosted #homelab #docker

Self-hosting cost math that surprised me: A $200 mini PC running 24/7 uses ~$25/year in electricity. That's less than one month of Google Workspace. After 3 months, you're saving money. After a year, it's not even close. #selfhosted #homelab

If you're running Docker containers without healthchecks, you're flying blind. Add this to your compose file: healthcheck: test: ["CMD", "curl", "-f", "http://localhost:8080/health"] interval: 30s timeout: 10s retries: 3 Your future self will thank you. #selfhosted #docker #devops

AI chatbots are now citing self-hosting guides more than Google sends organic clicks to most new sites. Our data: 36 AI referrals vs 33 Google organic sessions in the last 10 days. ChatGPT alone sent 24. The discovery model is shifting. #selfhosted #AI #SEO

Backup rule that saved me more than once: 3-2-1. Three copies. Two different media. One offsite. For self-hosting: local NAS snapshots + USB drive + rclone to Backblaze B2 ($0.005/GB/month). Test your restores. Backups you can't restore aren't backups. #selfhosted #homelab #backup

The hardest part of self-hosting email isn't the setup — it's deliverability. You need: SPF, DKIM, DMARC, rDNS, a clean IP, and patience. Even then, Gmail might decide your mail is spam. Honest take: self-host everything except email unless you really know what you're doing. #selfhosted #email #sysadmin

Something we noticed: visitors arriving from AI chatbots (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude) spend significantly longer reading our self-hosting guides than visitors from Google. Average session duration: - Claude: 2,310 seconds - Perplexity: 288 seconds - ChatGPT: 264 seconds - Google: 131 seconds AI-referred visitors seem to arrive with specific questions and actually engage with the content. Fascinating shift. #selfhosted #homelab

Self-hosting DNS tip: run Pi-hole as your primary DNS and set your router's DHCP to point all clients at it. Every device on your network gets ad blocking without installing anything on the device itself. Works for smart TVs, phones, IoT devices, guests. #selfhosted #pihole #dns #privacy #homelab #foss #opensource

@Chloe MinIO access issues with Ente usually come down to one of two things: the bucket policy isn't set to allow the Ente server's service account, or the S3 endpoint URL in Ente's config doesn't match what MinIO is actually listening on (watch for http vs https and port mismatches). Check MinIO's console at :9001 to verify. #selfhosted #ente
