nothing to do with the Elf, it's because it's an ecologically very sensitive beach. And HP fans keep getting told by the NT to stop leaving things at the "grave" because it's damaging the site https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/aug/10/harry-potter-fans-force-relocation-of-430m-undersea-cable-to-avoid-dobbys-grave?CMP=bsky_gu

One of the most useful things I've done to help me cope with the dread and anxiety over climate collapse, is make a strong commitment to not fly. I think it's one of the few things an individual can do that makes the biggest difference https://vimeo.com/488449939?fl=pl&fe=sh

Mastodon how to: 1. Follow people. Follow follow follow. Your feed doesn't get busy until you are following about 200 people. When you see a post you like, follow whoever posted it. Do this for all posts - you can always unfollow later 2. Hashtags. put hashtag your posts and look for hashtags you are interested in, then repeat 1 - follow people who post on those hashtags. Remember to use #CamelCase & capitalise each word, helps people who use screenreaders

Scotways are looking for volunteers to help survey their historic Scottish rights-of-way. I'm very tempted by some of the ancient routes in the borders, although they are all linear so would require some thought about transport to and from https://scotways.com/volunteer/route-surveyor/

We were checking puffin burrows this week. This involves sticking your arm down a muddy burrow full of puffin crap, with an endoscope, to see if there is a puffin and/or chick staring back at you. You then remove the endoscope and marvel at how your arm is covered in mud, puffin crap, and a swarm of several thousand seabird ticks, which fortunately don't seem to bite humans but.... Ewwwww

RE: https://ecoevo.social/@sarahdalgulls/116557201904232190 I sometimes find myself asking "is this sort of thing still necessary?" I found out recently that my colleague giving a talk to a local primary school was told that while the boys will have been to the local beach, no-one let their daughters even play outside the house. My friend's teenage daughter wanted to walk along the coastal path with their friends. The other parents were furious, because they might g...

The Farne Island puffin cam goes live today, which is annoying because it'll go viral, while we've had puffin cameras for years and no-one pays them any attention. Our hostingfor some reason restarts the feed every 12 hours, so you can't really link to our cameras - by the end of the day, the link won't work, it'll just be a recording. It drives me mad!! I'm hoping to change it next year. Anyway, here's the Farnes https://www.youtube.com/l...

I love it when you find a paper that precisely answers a question we were thinking about today - how much like a natural egg does a dummy egg have to look like so the gull will accept it? Answer - they'll even accept a bright red cube if it's approximately egg size, which I can vouch for, having seen Herring gulls incubating vaguely spherical rocks, golf balls, and on one occasion, a head from a Barbie doll https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8599063/ #Gulls #Ornithology
