if I say that a contemporary film has "aboutsomethingness" instead of being about something, does that scan, like do you also immediately intuit what I'm talking about? does it help if I say I'm thinking about an Elevated Horror film when I'm thinking about this phrase lol

I really want to believe in the small web on principle but it kinda feels like you have to fight an increasing number of world or provincial governments on one side and a massive army of botnet scrapers on the other, to say nothing of any given payment processor deciding to do a forensic analysis of whether your content adheres to their brand. idk it's starting to feel like I should put my energy into xerox zine mail distribution networks instead or something

I wish mastodon reposting validation worked some other way than the kind of stupid way it works now where I get 422 errors all the time if I try to reblog something too quickly

RE: https://neuromatch.social/@jonny/117325137427138728 this is so delightful to me because as a non programmer I realized, really quickly into working on A Host of Gentle Terrors, that if there was something I wanted the player to experience, it was easiest to simply *write it myself* rather than trying to procedurally generate it and apparently these chatbots have arrived at the exact same conclusion: if you want the user to have an experience, just cheat lmao

am I stupid or does mastodon not have a way of just going from someone's profile directly to a search of that person's posts/tags

man the chatroom episode of Stand Alone Complex is such an all timer they perfectly captured so many Types Of Forum Guy. they even predicted the War Thunder Leak Guy!

medicaid "work requirements" 🤢 next year mean it's a great time to toss me a couple dollars extra to get my income across that threshold below which they, I assume, just take me out behind the shed and shoot me like a sick dog. https://www.patreon.com/c/StormingtheIvoryTower

I updated my Patreon "About" page for the first time in an actual decade and had some thoughts and feelings about the change from a chipper poptimistic sales pitch to... well, something a lot more raw and honest to where my life and work are, 15 years since I started. https://www.patreon.com/StormingtheIvoryTower/posts/ive-got-new-page-165513315?pr=true

@itsnero@mstdn.itsnero.com what do you think a webcomic reader would want feature-wise that's different to an article reader? asking here too since I'd rather talk here than on bluesky lol

you notice how even the absolute biggest websites in the world now have just... all these little weird bugs, broken features, strangely warped functionality, just all kinds of small bits of wrongness and neglect and dysfunction that I guess everyone's given up on trying to fix?

I am not immune to tumblr mindset (becoming fixated on men who suck) so I'm very thankful that The Vampire Lestat provided a useful counterbalance (woman who sucks) (Gabrielle <3 <3 <3 )

one thing I legitimately don't know how to handle, with launching ideally multiple websites, is how concerned I should be about AI DDOSing me into either oblivion or bankruptcy. idk if there's even anything I can DO about it. makes me wonder if I should release my shit as interactive cd-roms instead

fully respect the "no cgi is really just invisible cgi" push but I do think people are starting to do a subtle little motte and bailey where because competent looking movies use cgi, we shouldn't point out the overused-cgi slop house style of disney productions. but they do simply look like ass.

@SophiaSurname@shrike.club looking into it it seems like it's gotten a bit of a reappraisal. critics historically have been pretty mixed and afaict so have fans of pink floyd... I think probably people who aren't fans of pink floyd mostly just haven't watched it. Roger deriding the film probably didn't help its reputation for a while

a shocking number of "progressive" youtubers started out analyzing art or well more accurately doing commentary on pop culture, and gradually realized they could get way bigger selling essentially overstuffed, politically palatable upmarket tabloids. someone should probably study that shit.

people will look at a brilliantly written and portrayed character positioned constantly as having a tense even hostile relationship to the player and legitimately be like "actually *he* is just a blank slate for the player to project onto"

sometimes I feel bad about not "getting", like, when an artist casts a piece of cardboard in bronze then paints it to create a trompe-l'oeil representation of the original object for example then I remember a lot of people still think *abstraction* isn't "real art" and I feel better
