The boondoggle (Inland Rail) is dead, long live the boondoggle (Snowy 2.0)! These sort of articles really should name as many of the firms and individuals involved in the initial cost benefit analysis as possible. On the cost side, $15bn turned out to be $30bn which turned out to be $45bn. Tax reform proposal: The Australian government currently charges a Passenger Movement Charge (PMC) of $70 per departing passenger. This means that a billionaire in a private jet with 9 mates pays about $700, while a Qantas plane full of passengers pays about $17,500. Replace the PMC with a flat charge of $15,000 per aircraft.
