How should PieFed handle accounts that mix human activity with automated reposting? Recently there have started to be a few accounts that seem to be used by a person for writing comments while also being used by scripts to automatically repost content from Reddit and possibly elsewhere. This doesn’t cleanly fit into our existing tools for classifying accounts and posts - a conventional bot might post RSS articles or other automated content, and users can choose to filter based on that bot setti...

from the mod log: https://s.faf-pb.xyz/lXxek The output from the LLM was provided as proof that someone needed to be banned. I didn’t want to do this but my hand was forced by their dissembling, minimization and bullshit. Note how the output includes a nice big logo with a slogan and ascii graphics - this was not a one-off experiment, this is an app they were proud to call their own.

Would you agree that a post written by a LLM is "low effort"?

Anyone know of a gemlog to RSS tool? Then that could be fed into a RSS to fedi bot.

If the goal is solidarity and community, creating a world where little feudal lords reign over independent territories and negotiate the terms of the interchange of ideas can hardly be the best answer. I very much understand that in times of rising authoritarianism such an escape into decentralised resistance is alluring to progressive political movements. But this is a temporary fix at best. It is not a progressive vision for what comes after. Decentralisation without social institutions that d...

This project does not allow contributions generated by large languages models (LLMs). We are taking these steps due to: The potential negative influence of AI generated content on quality, developer alienation from their code and skill rot. Legal complications such as the inability to claim copyright and ensure others’ licensing and copyright have not been violated. Ethical concerns including but not limited to those regarding intellectual property theft, environmental impact, the effec...

A very entertaining read. I'm completely unsurprised, based on my experience trying to use Azure. Garbage platform. And now they're hacking on that shitshow with CoPilot. Jesus wept.

You’ll get taken to a random community. Once you arrive there’s a link at the top of the page to /r/random so you can just hammer away at that until you get somewhere that’s the right combo of random and interesting. There is also /r/randnsfw that takes you to a random nsfw communty if your instance has them.

A few months ago I threw this question out into the void - “what if you could access the fediverse through your Usenet reader??” and got almost no response. Still, the idea had lodged in my brain and wouldn’t go away so this weekend I caved in and built the thing. Hat tip to the author of the excellent nntpserver package that did all the hard stuff. I look forward to seeing someone’s screenshots of fediverse posts on a Commodore 64, some day. This will be released as a part of PieFed 1.7...

I was at a tech conference in Sweden when it started. I hadn’t slept in days. I was one of the most prolific open source developers in the Python ecosystem, maintaining the most downloaded HTTP library on Earth, keynoting conferences across the world, and I was losing my mind in a hotel room six thousand miles from home.
