Travelled to Osaka today on Shinkansen - hit 285km/hr! Visited the Castle, Aquarium (I’m not a fan of them, or zoos, but my kids love them), and then went out in Dōtonbori for dinner. Universal Studios tomorrow so the wallet will take a beating from the rort they have going on food.

Didn’t think this was a phrase I’d need.

But before the unpleasant situation in the restaurant, we had a great day! Went to Yumiyoshi-taisha, a temple that was started in 211. Then to the opposite end of time to Denden Town, where the 12yo got a Japanese Super Mario bros for his Nintendo DSi. Explored around there for a while then Shinkansen to Kyoto. Hotel check-in, out for dinner to a basement restaurant where we were the only westerners, no shoes, sit at a sunken table type experience.

Kyoto was great - temple-tastic! Went to Kinkaku-ji yesterday, followed up by 3-4 hours at the Nintendo museum. That was fantastic. Went to Hiroshima today to the peace museum. Mr 7 got a bit upset inside. Then took a train and ferry down to the Itsukushima Torii on Miyajima island. Would have loved to spend more time there but had to get back to Hiroshima to get on Shinkansen back to Tokyo (still on it now). Managed to find time to visit the Hiroshima Pokemon Centre though 🤓

Hah! I just discovered if you drop your phone with the #letterboxd app open a gremlin shows up. Nice Easter egg! A hard side tap shows it as well if you’re not into dropping phones.

If you’re after another #letterboxd app easter egg, tag “Bugonia” as a watched film. Clever. Also, good film. Similar twist as 10 Cloverfield Lane. #spoiler although as an undiagnosed ADHD guy it was no surprise.

Off to see Split Enz tonight! Based on what I’m seeing in the car park, I’m on the younger side here. Granted, I was around 3 when they were popular but I would have expected to see a few more “youngsters”.

Heading home again… been in Melbourne for a few days. Good work trip. Had some good food, and my first Matcha Latte ever.

Been at the Google Cloud Summit in Sydney this week. Attended both the partner day and the customer day. The conference itself was so-so but it was great to meet a bunch of the Google team as well as more people from our clients.

Everything at the conference was AI. Agents in this, Gemini in that. Not much in terms of new products, mostly doubling-down on that’s there already and agentifying it all. Even the tracks - AI in everything. I guess analysts don’t back you unless you pitch like that.

I recently got a new bicycle to commute to work on the Workride scheme (it’s a pre-tax salary sacrifice to get the bike tax free, endorsed by the IRD - get your NZ workplace in on it if they’re not already). The new bike is great. It’s a Marin gravel bike so closer to a road bike than the mountain bike I was riding previously. It’s astounding how much faster you can go on the thinner tires and lighter frame. Just have to watch out even more for the cars, but it nice to be passing them for a lot...
