What stage of #climate are we in? The half a million deaths by February stage. https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/23/climate/super-el-nino-heat-deaths?Date=20260923&Profile=CNNweather&utm_content=1790178401&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter

Last boost: the value of Youtube, for me, is that it has every more or less obscure song on it. It somehow became a free music site where things were not taken down: I have no idea why. It has music that streaming services do not carry.

RE: https://c.im/@cdarwin/117073852788415443 As always, gun rights are only for right-wingers, and gun nuts organizations will only defend right-wingers. It's the end of an era. I went to archive.ph to get around an NYT paywall and got a message that I needed to disable my ad blocker. I never trusted archive.ph (or any of its equivalent aliases) but it was good enough to evade paywalls with.

This clickbait "which animals could a person actually beat in a fight" is boring because it focuses on the large ones where we know that people are delusional. I was more interested in the small ones. 30% of humans think that they couldn't beat a house cat in a fight? Or 40% for a goose? There have been no reports of someone dying due to a goose attack. There have been reports of broken bones but it's not clear whether this is from running away and tripping...

Since I have written about how bad tariffs on Chinese renewables are -- and since both Europe and the US (under both parties) have these tariffs -- I should explain in more detail what tariffs do in this case. tl/dr: "Oh no the fossil fuel I own is being underpriced by renewables how can I make renewables more expensive" #climate #renewables 1/n

Good headline, but of course this is still a good vibes shading the truth headline. It's true in that stopping burning fossils fuels will eventually fix our smoky skies. It's false in that this will happen, probably, long into the future. In the short run the answer to "What will fix our smoky skies?" is that nothing will. We already screwed up the chance that we had to fix this. https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/wildfire-climate-emissions-smoke-9.7274862

When people write things like "we need to end the use of fossil fuels", who is "we"? It's important to think about this because otherwise you end up with foolish stuff like "everyone is guilty." The people who had the authority and power to build infrastructure that everyone has to use are guilty. Do people in liberal democracies have any power over those people? No they do not, at least via voting and protest. Those people inhabit all political parties....

Want to do something about smoke from Canadian wildfires? You can't. You're already in the FO part of FAFO and as far as I know no one can do anything about them, they will continue being at least this bad for the rest of our lives. By "no one" I mean that even if the Canadian government somehow stopped being completely dominated by resource extractors, I don't think that they could do anything now. This wasn't true maybe 20 years ago. But, you know -- that was the...

What is one of the worst things about imperial science, such as almost all science practiced in the US? It's that people believe that a high level of funding for science produces science that is irreplaceable, rather than science that is controlled. (mentioning @dirtwizard666@cyberpunk.lol at the top of this, he's written a lot more about imperial science than I have) 1/n

With regard to #climate, I *think* that we've avoided billions of people killed. I think that we're still headed for hundreds of millions of people killed. "Scientists at Kings College London estimated that 2 degrees centigrade of warming would make one-third of the earth’s landmass effectively uninhabitable for people over sixty." OK. We're going to have at least 2 degrees of warming. Are countries going to allow mass migration from the uninhabitable-for-elderly place...

Periodic self-repetition: As a data librarian I can say that "AI" is not a matter of personal preference -- whether you like it or not, or whether you have found some use that you think is useful. It actively destroys organized knowledge, and therefore it actively destroys civilization. Whenever someone looks for a human written text and can't find it because statistical near variants have been created and indexed, whenever "AI" "hallucinate...

If this cease fire marks the end of the immediate Palestinian genocide, then Trump and the GOP will have supported genocide for a shorter period of time then Biden and the Democrats. The Democrats were never the lesser evil at all. People who say "you have to vote for genocide, you have no choice" never are. And no, Trump's killings in the US do not outweigh supporting the genocide of a people.

Joyscrolling! How do fascist regimes end? Those of us on the left would like to think that the people rise up. This hardly ever happens. No, historically there are two main ways they end: 1) charismatic leader dies of old age 2) *the regime is unable to keep itself from starting wars it can't win* Great news! Looks like the second one!

The big Bluesky thing now is "It's not manufacturing jobs you want, it's a stable job with a middle-class wage" or some variation. As an anarchist I have to tell you that you shouldn't want any job. Not any prole labor and not any state assigned labor. If you consider a chosen occupation "a job" then you may want that but you shouldn't really want or need to be paid in money, at least money as we know it.

Trump "banned antifa" in 2020, back in his first term. It means nothing in itself except as a reminder that fascist governments continually threaten to exterminate their foes, and do so to the exact extent that people do not communally resist them doing so.

With regard to the US Voting Rights Act: no one should vote. The system should end. It's common to hear, in reaction to anarchism, "well we won those rights". No you didn't. VRA started 1965, ended 2026, about 60 years out of 250 years of American history. There should be no more American history. #uspol
