If you think voting is not worth your time then take some time to wonder why fascist dictators try so hard to make it impossible

Worth mentioning that duckduckgo exposes a free llm service, and it claims to "not track you". I'm not particularly inclined to trust that, but I don't have to, because duckduckgo lets you use its services through Tor without pestering you with captchas. You do with this information what you will.

I use the underground alternative so that when something problematic comes up with the mainstream option, I can act smug safely in the knowledge that when the same thing happens with the thing I'm using, no one's gonna hear about it.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@luckytran/116863488282016628 Okay this is fucking wild. If white people rich enough to own a fucking racing sailboat can't fly a flag with words on it without some government boat with a fucking machine gun coming over to escort them back to land, nobody in your damn country has any freedom of speech. Nobody.

@Daojoan@mastodon.social Love this, thinking about a practical implementation. We could have software that generates cryptographic certificates, which anyone who already has one can issue. The new certificate would contain the issuer's certificate, which by this rule would itself contain its own issuer's certificate, and so on. Pull requests, social media posts, whatever, could have certificates attached, and be visible to clients who would reject anything without a trusted cert somewh...

#forgeposting time :D Finished a new hardy today, that was a few after-work sessions spread out over the past few weeks. It's a real workout to shape thick pieces like this, even my hammer's handle gave out at some point and I had to replace it 😆 On the pics I'm showing it next to another hardy I made last year and which was one of my first projects, it served me half-decently until now but it's very rough. Not gonna lie, I feel like this shows my progress very...

Being smart or dumb is largely a choice. Sure, not everyone has the same innate aptitude in all aspects of reasoning. But the main key to making the right decisions is navigating around cognitive pitfalls. Stuff like confirmation bias, sophistry, etc. All this knowledge is freely and publicly available. I've known mentally challenged people who were smart, and "high potential" people who were letting their gifts amount to nothing. My point here is if you think you&a...

In understand the principle behind "JS everywhere". We're stuck with it for client-side scripts so might as well use it everywhere so we only have one language to learn. Another take which I find infinitely more valid is that JS is a bad language with bad features and in order to mitigate its harm we should *only* use it where we are stuck with it, and use basically anything else in all other situations.

Not a fan of the saying "the best things in life are free". Nothing worthwhile's free in this world. IMO It's truer to say that the best things in life can't be bought with money.

Sometimes in software development you gotta cut your losses and let go of a really elegant algorithm that you're super proud of in favour of a much simpler one that *might* not scale as well hypothetically, but in practice does the job in a much more maintainable way. There is strength in humility.

CEOs plugging AI everywhere thinking they're getting 80% of results for 20% of effort, completely oblivious to the fact that what's really happening is they're cashing out on their brands' reputations. They have no idea of the value of social capital because they never had to work to build it. Pretty much on the nose for rich kids who think they earned the privilege they were born in.

For frozen chicken wings, I know the box says to put them on a tin with aluminum foil, but screw that. Put them right on the oven rack, and turn on the top and bottom coils at 450F. No need for convection. No need to turn them over halfway through. Trust me.

If an llm can "solve" a problem, that's only because its training data included an instance of the same problem. I think that once the market catches up to what these things are and aren't, they can benefit humanity by reducing duplication of effort in business apps and such. This will leave human talent to focus on novel problems. And the companies who shed their intellectual capital because they aren't getting this will be left in the dust when the t...
