"Debian neither endorses nor prohibits the use of generative AI tools" Oh well. It looks like I will have to go distro shopping :( https://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2026/08/msg00360.html

Today random electronics works: fixing a headlamp for my stepbrother and an old duplo train for my nephew. Both had leaked batteries causing some corrosion inside. For the toy train it was just the battery terminals, so a good cleanup and reapplying a little bit of solder was enough. But there was an extra challenge as my nephew played with it while it was open, so it came "pre desassembled". REMOVE BATTERIES FROM YOUR DEVICES.

Mystery device found on the sidewalk today. There is a sticker with the brand "EO Guidage" which was a company making sound signalling system to guide blind people on crosswalks. Not sure why and how this was abandoned where I found it. It has some Renesas microcontroller, bluetooth, usb, and a built-in 5V power supply. I'll put it on the pile of things that may become devboards.

Random Haiku development action shots: currently we're updating libxml2 at haikuports and rebuilding all things that depend on it (due to lack of symbol versioning and namespacing, a process can't have multiple versions of libxml2 running at the same time). So, Blender is still running fine! (somewhat old version, but all I cared about is getting it building again) Next is trying to rebuild 0.A.D. which promises to be a challenge.

Seen this morning: a big "AI on board" ad on, of all things, a garbage truck. Can't decide if it's genius trolling or not thinking about the implications.

I received my GP2x breakout board PCB and now I have this crazy computer setup. I misplaced the SD card with my GP2x apps however, so I'll have to set it all up again (and hopefully find some software that actually works with a mouse or keyboard on the usb host port)

Today I recapped my Game Gear and replaced the power board. The oridinal capacitors leak and fail and may corrode the board. Now, instead of being completely dead, it shows some horizontal stripes on the screan and makes suffering noises. I guess I came too late and replacing the caps wasn't enough anymore. I will need to investigate further...

We statrted 2024 with a donation goal for Haiku set to $20000 (based on last year's donations). We had to bump it twice this year as donations kept coming, and it looks like we may reach $30000. Thank you all! ❤️

Just found out that there is now a vector/scalable version of the proggy fonts. It's great if you want tiny text that remains readable, and it has better unicode coverage than the old bitmap one. I'm happy to fit so much text on my screen again, but keep the ability to zoom in if needed! https://github.com/bluescan/proggyfonts

Made some progress today on eMMC storage support in Haiku. But no success yet, the commands to read data from the storage gets me a device timeout. I have several things to cleanup and improve, we'll see if that helps. And I hope I don't get any regressions on SD and SDHC cards.

My server ran out of memory because the web statistics script cannot keep up with parsing the logs with so many scrapper bots visiting me. At this point, 65% of the requests are being rejected and the IP blocked (which means I still reach 65% with requests comming from different IP addresses). And I'm likely very far from detecting and rejecting all the bots.

One of my neighbors visited me to play videogames today (yes, as if we were 12 years old again 😁). We found out that my SNES and PS1 controllers needed some maintenance. The PS1 just needed a bit of cleanup of the conductive pads for the start button. The SNES one is really worn out and held together with hot glue already...

Yesterday I couldn't find my phone. Turns out it somhow fell off my balcony to the parking lot. And didn't survive. Fortunately I have a spare phone that's only one year older, and this one is running lineageos so actually a newer android version and running smoother. I hope there will be no important data lost. A few other less important things broke today as well. Not a great day...

Broken stuff status update: I wanted to assemble an expansion card for Amstrad CPC. For this I need to flash some GALs. But the power supply for my GAL programmer is dead. I wanted to troubleshoot it but my multimeter ran out of batteries. So instead I decided to swap it out for an adjustable bench power supply. That's supposed td go up to 12V, but only goes to 10. Anyway, new battery acquired and installed in the multimeter, and power supply recalibrated so it goes up to 13 now.

I didn't find a convenient to use html documentation/instruction reference for the 68000, so I made one! (I hadn't done html frames in a long while) http://pulkomandy.tk/m68k

For afew days I was thinking about ways to interface the EF9367 video chip with 4464 RAM (it is designed for 4116 originally). I thought I could use "page mode" to do two successive accesses to the RAM and avoid having to use 8 RAM chips. But it's not going to happen, the EF9367 is way too slow for that. I hadn't realized how tight its timings are. This could be fixed with some extra buffers, but then the circuit becomes way too complicated. Well, one useless p...

I can spend hours tweaking PCB traces around until everything just looks nice and pleasing. No one will care, and the circuit will work (or not work) regardless. I'm now waiting for confirmation from the only potential supplier I can find for what may be the right connector for the GP2x (but they may have miscatalogued it and they don't have a picture, so I asked them if they can check if it at least looks similar). If you know a place where I can still buy TTA-24 connectors, l...

How do you know early when #Haikuos is preparing for a new release? It's when I start asking people to have a look at our #i18n / #translation tool and help complete translations for various languages. For beta releases, our policy is to include only languages where the translation is at least 60% complete. This time we need help to reach this in Belarusian, Croatian, Bulgarian, and Slovenian. Lithuanian and Slovak are above 60% but may need some help too.

I just made a new release of Renga, the #xmpp client for @haiku #haikuos ! https://pulkomandy.tk/projects/renga Secure storage of account passwords, multiple accounts and anonymous account support, xep-402 bookmarks, better error handling and less crashes, tls 1.3 channel binding, better handling of hyperlinks. But also the chat view code was entirely replaced, and that will open the way for reactions, corrections, retractations and MAM in future releases
