I once called out a co-worker for regularly being late to meetings. His response was to say that he was going to start showing up to all our meetings early, ready to call me out if I was even one minute late. Friends, I can not stress enough how much that sounds like a great time to me. A world where everyone is on time and things start on time? Fuck yes.

It takes me about as much work to sponsor a conference as it does to give a 1 hour talk. Choosing to do them both at the same conference was certainly *a* decision.

The National Gallery of Art and Nagios have very similar favicons. What can I say, I'm having an interesting morning.

@donhawkins@mastodon.social @Binder@petrous.vislae.town I'm not quite there, but my calendar says I've only got 20 hours of meetings this whole month, which isn't too bad.

My son was curious how long it took me to fall asleep, I explained that I fall asleep really quickly. There may have been more conversations between him and my wife @schmalliso@glammr.us, since she DM'd me my count last night. I think this might be my super power.

I went to a PTA meeting last night and learned two key things. 1. In Ontario school playgrounds are funded by the parent council & local community. So if you've got a playground in a rich neighbourhood that's pretty easy. If it's a not so rich area it can take years and years. 2. School playgrounds are inspected on a cadence, and if they're deemed unsafe they're immediately closed. You could have a playground on Tuesday, it would be closed on Wednesday, and ripped out...

Sometimes I play this little game with an old helium balloon that has slowly drifted to the ground. I cut the string shorter and shorter, aiming for that perfect moment where the balloon is neutrally buoyant. Anyways, congrats!

I've had this idea for a while about an app I'd call "pretty sky". When the sky is super pretty, you tell the app. Other people using the app get a push notification that the sky is pretty. Last night's sky made me wish I had it so I could tell other people how pretty the sky was. Or someone could have told me sooner so I'd see it longer.

I don't understand how datacenters could enrich local communities unless the local community gets to tax the heck out of them. So few people work at a datacenter! I had access to 151 Front for years, past the security desk I'd never see anyone. Unless the hardware breaks modern servers rarely require a human to be near them. On companies operating "at scale" they won't even send a human unless there's a full shift of work for them to do.

Do you use PHP at work? Does your employer support the PHP Foundation? If your answers are yes and no... Maybe see if you can get them to be Yes and Yes. https://github.com/sponsors/ThePHPF

I was once at a conference party to network, and found a table full of people I didn’t recognize. It was a big table, maybe I’d even find someone who could use WonderProxy… Everyone at the table worked for the same company. I’d just crashed a corporate group.

My children have been to two different artisanal broom stores in the past week. If someone ran a survey right now they'd receive a very skewed impression of our broom needs.

Last night, UPS sends me an email. YOUR PACKAGE WILL ARRIVE TOMORROW. PREPARE THYSELF. THE PACKAGE IS IMMINENT. BETWEEN ONE AND FOUR PM YOUR LIFE WILL CHANGE. This morning, UPS tracking page. Ya bro, I don't know what to tell you. I've like "heard" of the package if you know what I mean, but like I haven't even seen it or anything.

My lovely wife bought me a table saw outfeed table for Father’s Day. It was so much more work assembling than we expected. The instructions weren’t done by ikea, there’s no “tab a in slot b” Instead it’s a “insert an m6x35 bolt through the correct hole in bar B, with two washers on each side, attach to the side rail of the PCS, and check for level. Adjust washers until the top of the plate is level with the saw top. Repeat 4 times, switching bolt side for the last two.” I love it, but wow.

I got some spam this morning advertising a new tactile flashlight. I'm assuming they meant tactical. But now I'm just wondering how interesting a flashlight could be to touch. Really good knurling? A satisfying button so you really know where you stand? Perhaps a copper ring on a ball bearing so you could spin it in your hand while pointing it in the same direction? Just a sec, there's potential here, let me pull that out of spam and... shit. they meant tactical.

I’ve got an idea. What if there was a class in high school that covered topics like: - how to have a phone call in public that doesn’t annoy everyone. - how to use headphones. - how to call out racism on the bus. - what is a line. - how to zipper merge in traffic. Etc

Does anyone else occasionally feel compelled to end a command line instruction with a question mark? Not because of how it's handled in bash/your shell of choice. But because you're not sure that's what you need to be running.

There's a swath of Reddit currently angry at the Canadian Prime Minister for saying he won't use our energy supply to the US as leverage in trade negotiations. This swath of Reddit is shouting that he's an idiot for not seeing that leverage. It's trendy to elect uneducated blowhards to head of state. But Canada bucked the trend and elected a Harvard & Oxford educated individual who was head of the Bank of Canada for 5 years. Is it possible he understands things we don'...
