It's not just acheologists that put shards together. Until the end of the 20th C. the 'Topfflicker' or potmender was a regular tradesman on markets in Central-Europe. Pots that were considered precious were put together using glue and clamps or put together with a knittwork of metal wire. #sustainableceramics #ceramicsinmuseums #europeanceramics #keramiek #keramik #ceramics #ceramique

Trade in food was strictly regulated in large parts of the Netherlands from the 17th Century on. Strawberries and other soft fruit had to be packed and transported in special pots. Usually a cup or bowl with a heavy foot and a hole in the bottom to prevent moisture to foul the fruit. Most market towns had their own measure for soft fruits and only licenced potters were allowed to produce these strawberry cups. #keramiek #ceramics #ceramique #keramik #historyofceramics

#Fermentation and Korean #onggi have become very fashionable. But it is not so very long ago that #preservation and fermantation were common in most North-Western European households. With the loss of this preservation culture local potters lost an important source of imcome.
