Reminder that fedi is an echo chamber in general, but it's an echo chamber _especially_ when it comes to LLMs. Go to literally any IRL tech-related community, any other social media platform or heck, just talk to your relatives and friends IRL. The thoughts and opinions on this site, esp. on this topic, do not in any way reflect a majority opinion.

If the EU commission really cared one bit about not being dependent on having access to proprietary US-owned LLMs that are only available via an API or with heavily restricted weights, it would start the process of blocking those services Union-wide so that open alternatives have a way to grow with the limited funding available

I hate AppImages so much it's unreal. I have literally one single on my system (Beeper) and it's the No. 1 thing that breaks in weird and stupid ways, like constantly renaming the binary to something different after the stupid auto-updater runs. Why tf is there an auto-updater on an app running on a Linux system in 2026? Utterly insane.

https://hacks.mozilla.org/2026/02/making-webassembly-a-first-class-language-on-the-web/ Gosh this is so cool. A native DOM API exposed to WebAssembly right in the browser, and even better - via the Component Model, which has been under development and been getting more and more refinements over the past few yeass 👀 That means there will officially no longer be a need for JS glue code on the web!

https://archive.ph/hHTtf > Anthropic warned that illicitly distilled models lacked necessary safeguards, creating significant national security risks. If these models are open-sourced, the risk multiplies as capabilities spread freely beyond any single government's control "Illicit destilled models", "if these models are open-sourced" - I stg these US LLM labs just sound like supervillians at this point

I really hope that whatever platform we collectively move to post-GitHub has a system to prevent what happened with GitHub again. To me, enshittification like this and a slow collapse was inevitable simply because the way it was funded and purchased. That's why I hope that we move to Codeberg. Not for any particular technical merit, but because its values and structure actually align with OSS projects. There is a social system in place to prevent enshittification there.
