RE: https://writing.exchange/@ernie/117273035596679265 Well this turned out to be a rabbit hole. Apparently I was posting about Quake modding in 1996 (13yo) and about Visual Basic in 1999 (16yo).

It's kind of infuriating how, as soon as you try to do good, you're held to impossible standards. People are shit and companies are shit all the time and nobody bats an eye. But do volunteer work for your FOSS community, start a project that tries to do things more ethically, just be visibly not shit, and people left and right come out of the woodwork to point out all the ways in which you are not being absolutely flawless and perfect, and all the work that needs doing that you're n...

This has really been on my mind. Cause in a way it's blindingly obvious. You read that and you go "yeah we knew that". But it really drives the point home. People didn't choose AI. Companies didn't choose AI. Governments didn't choose AI. A small number of people, controlling a small number of entities, controlling unfathomable amounts of money, chose AI. Went all in. And the sheer capitalist force of that made it inevitable, made it an undeniable reality. Made compan...

RE: https://toot.cat/@plexus/116918487730763884 I did not find the thing I was looking for, but I did discover Kula, and I'm liking it a lot so far. It was pretty easy to set up, and has already helped me diagnose an issue. https://clojurians-log.clojureverse.org/__kula/

I just emailed all Belgian MEPs and the Cypriot presidency of the EU to urge them to reject the Chat Control bill. This mass surveillance bill has been voted down before, but somehow it keeps coming back. We're in the final hours before the vote! https://fightchatcontrol.eu/

Made myself a profile on https://couchers.org/, in preparation for an upcoming travel adventure. I was big on Couchsurfing in my 20s, but Couchsurfing was also one of the first sites that enshittified HARD. A community built by volunteers, sold to private equity, and locked behind a subscription... But anyway, there's a few other hospitality exchange (hospex) platforms that tried to fill the gap, notable BeWelcome, but Couchers really nails the vibe of the old CS and seems to have a good am...

The longer it sits with me the more the commodore phone pisses me off. Browser: blocked. Social media: blocked. We don't need lobotomized nostalgia machines, we need devices that give the user the power to shape their experience. Operating systems designed with human wellbeing in mind. Calm, powerful technology that grants agency. This is worse than a toy. (And we need to keep big tech accountable for their harmful products, but that's another story.)

RE: https://mastodon.social/@marijn/116849309798650465 Instead of trying to change ProseMirror to incorporate these new insights, I have chosen to create a completely new system with a new name. A ProseMirror 2.0 with an incompatible interface would amount to the same but make it ambiguous what people mean when referring to ProseMirror. This is the way, people! I know your project has built up all this clout and name recognition, but if the new version is really a rewrite, or a significant re...

Pro-tips for anyone creating an address form. ZIP code is not a generic English term for postal code, but instead a very specific USPS thing (it stands for Zone Improvement Plan). If you serve anyone outside the US of A, call it "Postal Code". Not every country has states, don't make it a mandatory field. Many, many more nuances to international addresses, but these are the ones that bother me most as a Belgian.

Signed the contract and paid the first installment for the venue, so it's official. HeartConf 2027 (née Heart of Clojure) is happening! August 18-19 2027 in Mechelen, Belgium.

Anecdotally, from talking to a lot of people in person at Dutch Clojure Days, my impression is that, at least in this community, the number of people who practice or believe in full on vibe coding is very small. The number who categorically don't engage with AI is also very small. The vast majority seems to use some LLM tools for coding at least semi-regularly, and think it's useful at least for some things (not always agreeing on which things). There's huge variation though in how...

I did a write-up of the tools and tooling we used while organising Heart of Clojure 2024. Is anyone aware of similar posts from other conferences, especially community/open-source events? Are there organisers on here that want to share what their stack and process looks like? https://github.com/heartofclojure/heartofclojure-site-2024/wiki/Conference-Tooling RT appreciated ❤️

Something I've only come to appreciate recently. When an engineer hears "tech debt" they hear "bad". You don't want to go into debt if you can help it. It makes you anxious. You want to pay it off ASAP. But for business folks debt is just a tool to enable more growth. Debt is good, it's essential. You pay it off from future growth, or roll it over. But tech debt doesn't work like that. I think this leads to a lot of miscommunication and frustration.

As I agonise over these docs I ask myself, will anyone read this, or will they just ask claude? I already noticed this at my previous gig, reading comprehension, and the willingness to focus on a non-trivial piece of writing, just going down the drain. Just copy-paste it into chatgpt, skim the AI summary, move on. Reading technical docs is work, it takes effort and concentration, but you get rewarded with new skills. A good writer can make the reading easier, but there's a lower bound beyo...

#berlin peeps, I'm looking for someone who wants to sublet their place the last week of August. August 21 to August 30th or thereabouts. It's for me and possibly my partner. Non-smokers, no pets, responsible people who go to bed early. Lmk if you know of anyone who's leaving town around that time. Vielen Dank!🙏🐻

The Clojure Documentary is out! This was a delight to watch, it greatly humanises the tech and people behind it, but also gives a good overview of the things that make #Clojure remarkable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y24vK_QDLFg

This is the kind of AI discourse I would love to see more of. Grounded in research and reality, practical and centered on outcomes. Shaming and stigmatising people for their LLM use may feel justified, but it'll lead to the opposite outcome of what you want to achieve. Meet people where they're at, and focus on AI literacy instead. (Please don't engage with this point unless you've watched the video. Yes it's long, it took me a few sessions, it's worth it.) https://you...

I have some consulting capacity available the coming months. I have a proven track record of making tech teams more effective, through a combination of technical and non-technical work. I work around communication and documentation, dev experience, architecture, alignment between biz and the dev team, and software/product development process, as well as doing staff-level engineering work. DMs are open! Ping me if you like to have a chat! 🔁 = ❤️

Two very senior engineers, pairing for over an hour, to figure out that a function call had its first two arguments in the wrong order. I'm not sure what the moral of this story is. Maybe it's that stupid stuff will trip you up, no matter how experienced you are. Or that positional arguments were a mistake. Or maybe that meatbags weren't meant to code and we really do just need to hand it all over to the AI overlords.
