I don't even know the date of the upcoming Victorian state election and I'm already exhausted by it. #vixpol #auspol

Look, I get it, LLMs can't replace *your* expertise, but as a white middle-aged man in tech who is often confidently wrong and taken seriously anyway, they've already mastered the only thing I've ever been good at.

I'm now running navidrome¹ to stream my music collection and it's pretty great. I'm also very grateful that Picard² exists to fill in the metadata on CDs I ripped 20+ years ago. No gratitude to all the AI bots scraping musicbrainz/listenbrainz constantly and ruining things, especially when they could just bulk-download the data legitimately³. — ¹ https://navidrome.org/ ² https://picard.musicbrainz.org/ ³ https://blog.metabrainz.org/2026/08/19/growing-pains-an-update-on-the-listen...

I don't think @jonny@neuromatch.social convincing a flagship LLM to leak its own code, torrent files, and mine cryptocurrency will ever get old. https://neuromatch.social/@jonny/117324790823856750

I know I'm very late to the party, but Rosehaven¹ is very good and wholesome² and beautifully Australian. It doesn't seem to be on iView any more, but if you can find it then it's some of the best Australian comedy out there, and a balm for the soul.❤️ — ¹ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosehaven ² Wholesome by Australian comedy standards.

I have absolutely no idea how any country with below-replacement birthrates and an ageing population can argue against immigration, yet still expect the benefits that labour provides, like food availability, trades, and medical care. If we were using a system that prioritised essential jobs over pandering to the rich, then maybe, but instead we have capitalism. (And I know, I know... blaming the immigrants is a way to mislead people so they don't blame the ultra-wealthy, but still...)

I want to like the new release of #Jellyfin, which was thoroughly tested and is better than the old version in every way, EXCEPT it changed the position of one button that I always use and maybe now I need to give up on computers entirely.

Hey friends, I'm behind the times. Bandcamp used to be the ethical place to buy DRM-free music you can put on your own device, but I don't want to assume that's still the case. Where's the go-to place now?

Apologies to everyone for being behind on personal correspondence, I have been overrun with tasks and am desperate for sleep. I love you all. ❤️

Hey #homelab friends, I've been thinking about what would happen if the kids desktops had a hardware failure, and how we might best do backups. Said backups need to happen automatically, need to survive being interrupted, and require no input from the user. I'm considering just putting their entire home directories into a syncthing share with rolling versioning, mirroring to the enterprise storage Linux server we've got in the garage. That should be enough to handle both hardwar...

I love reading stories of nerds doing years of film restoration out of spite. Here's a story of that happening with the original Star Wars: https://www.thestarwarstrilogy.com/project-4k77/

Hey folks, letting you know that the #Newkind Australian Social Change Conference is coming up, running from 30th Sept through to 4th October this year in Dja Dja Wurrung Country, in Redbank, Victoria. This is genuinely one of the best events I've ever attended, and I'm very fortunate to be speaking again this year. The event prices includes all meals, entertainment, and a place for you to camp, with an option of tent hire available. The conference is family friendly. I&#39...

I'd forgotten that I wrote Harry Potter and the Australian Bureau of Statistics some ten years ago, but since I'm getting AO3 kudos I'm guessing it's #census time again. https://archiveofourown.org/works/7728838 #census2026 #census26

Me: "Did you know that if you're in the vacuum of space, your lungs continue to do gas exchange, but because there's no air they just strip all the oxygen out of your blood? You've got something like 12 seconds before you're unconscious from hypoxia." Kids: "Wait, you were scared of the ghost story we told you by a fake campfire, but somehow you're okay knowing *this*!?" #parenting

I have such mixed feelings looking at us going through the collapse of western civilisation. On one hand it has the possibility to do a lot of good, to reduce much of the inequity that western civilisation maintains. But on the other hand, the transition can be rough, and I want people to be okay. Collapse rarely happens all at once, and so I desperately hope for a transition that's as smooth as it can be, but I know there will be shocks along the way. The biggest thing I worry about is...

Okay, so I'm happy for them to say they found some fuel for the Apollo CSM. I'm willing to forgive Ed doing a wild untethered throw rather than just driving up next to the CSM and handing it over. I'm happy at a stretch for that to somehow be enough fuel for the CSM to get back to Earth. However my ability to suspend disbelief has been completely shaken by the CSM somehow having its RCS replenished as well. Even if this is an alternate universe, I find it hard to believe the RCS and...

Hey Australian homelab friends. If you want an ex-enterprise PowerEdge T630 server with 48TB(!) of storage on-board, 6 spare bays for whatever you want, dual power supplies, and capacity for up to (checks notes) 1.5TB of RAM, then this could be for you. (NB: Only 32GB RAM installed) You can get the price down to $750 if you sign up for ebay's free premium trial, and apply the 'TAX17' voucher. I then cancelled my trial, because I don't do subscriptions. Otherwise chuck in TAX15 t...

Coming out of a short depressive episode, which is good. This one wasn't subtle. Absolutely nothing brought me any joy, which at least made it easy to recognise as brain chemistry and not anything else. Bae, bless her heart, asked if my depression was from all the C++ I'd been looking at, and I had to explain it was instead the other way around.

• View post

Hello C++ friends, is there an equivalent of perlcritic or phpstan for C++? Plenty of compilers and linters will give me warnings when I'm doing things wrong, but I want something that says "what you're doing is fine, but best practices would be to…" Thank you in advance!

@dexter@bsd.network : Questionable Content is a web comic that's been continuously running for over 20 years, and Comic Rocket is a now rather old website from very good people that helps you keep track of where you are in your web-comics. Unfortunately, the Questionable Content (QC) website got hacked a while back, and was down for a while. It's now back, but due to changes in the HTTP Response headers it would no longer load in Comic Rocket. Of course, QC also offers an RSS feed, and...
