I created an account on https://www.observer.co.uk yesterday, to print out the crossword. Without opting into any newsletters I've had four emails from them since then.

Just got a ticket for #emfcamp at the weekend, so maybe see you there if you're going. Not sure which day(s) I'll be there yet (I'm not a camper).

On Letterboxd, I wish I could permanently filter out any list with more than, say, 200 movies in it. Whenever I think, “Is this film in a list of other films I might like?” it's all, “10,001 films to see before you die", “2,000,000 movies with ‘e' in the title”, “3 billion films that have sound”. Great, really useful, well done.

We vainly attempt to read the geopolitical runes based on the activity at the local army training camp. It’s been surprisingly quiet for a while. Yesterday, helicopters, unusually into the night. Today lots of varied gunfire. Probably fine, probably just a return to normal, probably.

"Don’t forget me," I say, trying to hold back tears. “I think of you so often. Every single day. But sometimes…" I break, and feel warm liquid run down a cheek. "Sometimes… sometimes it seems like you don't care any more." Nothing. "Please do this. We've spent so much time together. Over years. Decades!” I can't control myself now. I'm a mess. "Can you try, really TRY, to remember me?” I wail, a...

Dammit. I’m sitting under an apple tree and nearly got hit by a falling apple. If I’d sat a few inches to my right I could have discovered gravity!

Around this time every year I move last year's emails from the general Archive mailbox into a separate one for that year. Why? Because in the 1990s Eudora didn't cope well when mailboxes got too big, so I feel the need to please the email client gods by continuing to do this, whatever app I'm using.

Just failed to set up a new router. Good to see that I’ve learned nothing in the thirty years since I got my first job, as a sysadmin with zero knowledge of networking.

There's not much info online about Wired's brief (1996-7) foray into book publishing with HardWired, so I've put together what I can find along with a list of all their books, published and not. https://www.gyford.com/phil/writing/2026/04/14/hardwired-wired-books/

#Frontend #HTML people - do you set a maximum line width in your editor for HTML files? If so, what is it? It seems less useful for HTML compared to programming languages but in all these years I've never really stopped to think about what, if anything, I should set it to.

ME: I just can't quite justify £10/month for Kagi search. I’ll get by with *sigh* Google. GOOGLE: How about if we ask you to complete a captcha half the times you search with us? Does that help?

I need to add OCR data to a 6.5 MB PDF of scanned text. - pdf2go.com makes it into a 31 MB file - ilovepdf.com makes it into a 10 MB file - ABBYY FineReader makes it into a… 2 MB file! The latter doesn't *look* noticeably different to the original. I really do not understand PDFs.

Maybe £74/year is OK for hosting 4,900 photos taking up 11.6 GB? But given I rarely see or use them, it _feels_ like too much, every year forever.

I had a real Total Perspective Vortex style glimpse of the futility of human existence earlier but I was walking through an edge-of-town supermarket car park at the time so it's only to be expected.

Imagine my excitement when Flickr trailed that something big was on the way. A new app? Some great improvements to the website? Who could tell? How exciting! No, it's a photography festival in Minnesota.
