One of the areas I've most matured is simply asking a question when I don't understand something rather than nodding along or feeling it's an admission of personal failure. Especially in groups, this behavior is tied to realizing that "if you have a question, others probably do, too" which I see so often in my work. Problems and confusion fester because no one bothers to bring them up. And it doesn't inconvenience us, we want to help, to be asked...

It is almost as if, perversely, the worse the data format is the more fun it is to work with. I remember feeling like Innovative's Millennium load tables were secret pipe-delimited incantations & I was an apprentice mage discovering the old magic.

"adding language to our policy" is great and probably necessary but please do not substitute it for action that enforces the policy

Final day at CCA. 12 years 3 months 9 days at this job. I don't even feel that weird yet, perhaps I will next week.

I noticed the "Recorder" tab in Chrome Dev Tools for the first time today https://developer.chrome.com/docs/devtools/recorder I guess this has been around for years but I never bothered to read about it. It's for UI testing but it also seems like a way to do basic recorded macros of browser operations. Potentially very useful.

In my first month I saved $0.28 by using cloud object storage instead of a consumer service. Soon, I will be filthy rich.

Somehow the Chat Pile lead singer recommending Toni Morrison's Beloved in the middle of a concert makes sense? https://chatpile.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-roadburn-2023

At least my college going under saved me from dealing with Bitnami's image deprecations. There is always a silver lining.

Trying to remember to post some IG photos here, too. We had a lovely Saturday of errands, brunch, Portland Art Museum (free tickets via Multnomah County Public Library!), & I finally secured a real bookcase to the wall so I could add to it. The artwork is "Green Star Quilt" (2019) by Wally Dion & yes it is made out of circuitboards, using a pattern based on Native American quilts. An old lady also taking a picture of it said "I have to show my quilting...

These literal thousands of recorded shows digitized from someone's tape recording collection are incredible https://archive.org/details/aadamjacobs?tab=collection currently listening to the 1989(!!!) Nirvana shows but there's decades of content from hundreds of bands h/t the Code4Lib Slack

Bibliocommons kind of solved FRBRization and, perhaps because it's mainly used in public libraries, I don't really see anyone talk about it. I use a few different Bibliocommons instances of local public library systems & they combine records according to some more-intuitive idea of Work which combines things like audiobook, ebook, print, large print but does separate records for translations. It makes search results so much more legible than almost any academic library se...

Idle curiosity, if you were going to talk about one library technology development you're really excited about right now, what would it be? The ADA Title II deadline might be my answer. Yes, I know it's been postponed. Luckily, they waited so long to announce the delay that most institutions have already done the good work. Semantic / vector search? Bibframe?!?!? I feel like there has always been something exciting on deck but lately I am less sure what it is.

An excellent webinar on critical cataloging today as part of Fresno State's Womack Lecture Series. Every part I caught was amazing, but Emily Drabinski led with this slide which I just could not love more.

There are free IRS-certified tax preparation services for folks below a certain income level all over and I wish more people knew https://freetaxassistance.for.irs.gov/s/sitelocator The income limits vary by site but it doesn't hurt to check. Most students who are not working full time qualify, for instance. There's many multilingual sites. This is also a great program to volunteer for if you are at all inclined. You make a direct positive economic impact on your community.
