Just heard somebody described as the “shadow welfare spokesman” on BBCR4 saying that some people should not get full universal credit. If you reduce universal credit any further people will starve. It is barely enough to eat and certainly insufficient to cook or heat your house. It gives you just enough for food - nothing more. If it is reduced, people will starve to death.

A wealthy lady’s view of children in care in the 1960s- “I had always imagined they were horrid, vicious young hooligans who set fire to their own homes, strangled their baby sisters or attempted to murder their parents and that was why they had landed where they were and richly deserved it. It was quite an eye-opener, therefore, when I gradually began to piece together the tragic histories of some of the children who were put into care through no fault of their own.” She became a benefactor.

@Natasha_Jay@tech.lgbt he wasn’t first with evolution. But he was the first with enough money to self-publish a book on it He came to Edinburgh University, dropped out of his course but saw the work that was being done there on evolution. Robert Chambers was the first to write on evolutionary theories, but he wrote anonymously and published in England so as not to offend the church https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Robert_Chambers_(publisher,_born_1802)&wprov=rarw1

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd6w15vgp7lo the BBC chooses to highlight Australia in eliminating cervical cancer but vaccination rates are higher in Scotland. Scotland is closer to eliminating cervical cancer than practically any country in the world. But the BBC’s default position is: Scotland’s shite living in Scotland is shite and being Scottish is shite. “nothing good ever happens in Scotland” Here’s an impartial report: https://globalhealthnow.org/2025-04/scotlands-mission-banish...

@jik disarming society, including the police and prohibiting the carrying of arms, as as the case in virtually every other country would be a good start. The right to bear arms is from the days of the Wild West, 200 years ago. Incidentally, most other countries also have a de facto right to bear their arms but only with a licence and only in certain circumstances. It’s not rocket science.

@HighlandLawyer the levels of entitlement seen amongst some cyclists (not all by any means) is absolutely incredible. It seems that pinging the bell and/or shouting abuse are the default response. Very rarely do they apply the brakes, and only as the absolute last resort. The only explanation I can find is that for years they have been bullied by motor vehicles and now they bully the pedestrians. It is depressing how often the bullied become the bullies.

Pre 1948 Palestine was part of the British Empire and Palestinians held British passports. The British authorities held property records for the country. But the Balfour declaration released large numbers of immigrants and seems to have removed all the citizenship and property rights of the local inhabitants. It seems to me that Britain has more responsibility than any other country towards the appalling conditions in which Palestinians now find themselves. Why are we doing nothing?
