So today I did something which resulted in my computer restarting and now Debian won't boot into Gnome; it's stuck at tty1 _and_ it seems to have no internet connection, even though it's hardwired. Quite a fun afternoon.

Of course Tailwind is joining Shopify. Tailwind "is used to style products like ChatGPT, X, Cloudflare, Reddit, and Shopify" so naturally, aligning with fascists made the most sense. https://tailwindcss.com/blog/tailwind-is-joining-shopify

What's up nerds, what are we building today? Remember it's Friday, so absolutely ship to production and tell management to take a hike.

At my last job, we had a Slack channel where many of us said "Good morning" every morning. I'm sure many people felt it was quaint or unnecessary, and many did not participate. But many of us did, and it was a small moment of joy. We'd leave emojis. Working remotely, we didn't see each other face to face, almost ever. Sure, we sat on Zoom meetings (way too often), and we communicated all throughout the day, but literal in-person interactions were rare. I went to the offic...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@mrmasterkeyboard/116980326641813344 Keeping any code on GitHub is no longer an option. It's become a cesspool. Now is as good a day as any to finish that Codeberg migration, then delete my old GitHub repositories and delete my account. And hey, thanks to unemployment, I finally have the time to get this done.

What's the best terminal emulator on Debian, and why? I'm struggling to find a really good reason to use anything other than Gnome Terminal. I've been on iTerm2 for the last decade (on MacOS), so I'm looking for something maybe in that realm. The popular Debian alternatives seem cool, but also not really anything that I need. Like give me a strong reason not to just use Gnome Terminal.

I've been writing PHP, TypeScript, and Bash for years, along with HTML and CSS. My software engineering journey began in 2009 by making things for the web. Since then I have come to enjoy making all kinds of software. Until now, those languages have gotten me very far. You can really do a lot with a little. I've written a little C#, Rust, and Ruby over the years, but never really dove in too deep with those languages. Today I start learning Python, and was delighted to find how easy i...

Over the weekend I started developing "Best", a Bash testing framework with a focus on simplicity. The API and the terminal output are both heavily influenced by Jest and Pest. I will host the source code on Codeberg, and I'll be looking for anyone interested in trying it out and providing feedback. #TestDrivenDevelopment #TDD #Bash

While I'm between full-time roles, I am currently available for short-term remote software engineering contracts. I know PHP, WordPress, TypeScript, Express, Next.js, React, HTML, CSS, Sass, JavaScript, and Bash. I can build REST API's, microservices, SDK's, CLI's, websites, web apps, and whatever else you need. I'm able to chat over Slack and Zoom, or whatever you need. I can work with Jira, Bitbucket, GitHub, Codeberg, and whatever project management tools you like.

I get this nice UI warning at the top of every GitHub repository where "claude" is a "contributor". I'd like to also block other "ai" "agents" by username on GitHub. Does anyone know the usernames of some of the other popular slop machines?

TBH, kind of giving the side eye at all my previous colleagues who would joke about how quickly they ran through their monthly LLM token limits in a weekend or whatever. "And I just keep going, because the limit is never enforced!," I would hear with glee. I hope all the layoffs that followed made it worth it.

Apparently the industry is changing and the business is restructuring to keep up with the industry, so after six years at $employer, my role is no longer needed. I guess I'm on the job hunt in July, looking for software engineering work.

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange of the last 14 years that I've known my wife, I'd rate myself today, on a scale of 1 to 10, from totally screwing it up to it went great and she's very happy... Today about a 5. So definitely better than some years, definitely worse than many others.
