  To my knowledge, which is often wrong, that's necessary. It's a proof of work system, so your browser has to receive the challenge work, create background workers to do it, then submit the results and get authenticated. If the work wasn't challenging (slow), then it wouldn't be any impediment to scrapers and bots. Whether there are alternatives to proof of work that work well, I do not know. But fingerprinting alone is actually very difficult.

  8 or 9. Started my day with an outage alert. I had two different people propose fixing a data duplication bug by silently dropping the duplicate data. Neither asked why there was duplicate data. Silently deleting the data would have led to catastrophic issues and was masking a join key error.   I had an American explain “well you just know that 68 is long sleeve warm, 80 is shorts” or something, as if people cannot memorize that 18 is chilly and 21/22 is usual room temperature, 26 is shorts. The only thing I dislike like about Celsius is that my thermostat supports both, but doesn’t allow half degrees Celsius, so it provides less granular control in Celsius than if you set it to Fahrenheit.

  I forgot to pay my credit card last month. I didn’t think of it. I have money, I just forgot to transfer it. Kind of annoying you have to go in to the app and push the buttons to put money you have into the account with money you owe.

  If they’re basing this off browser user agents like a third of my traffic at least is random Chinese ips and requests with Chinese language in the headers. All of them would be flagged as unknown by the major user agent parsing libraries. None of the sure I work with have any Chinese content or content remotely useful for Chinese people, so it’s scrapers.
