This Sunday #SachsenAnhalt elects a new state parliament. For the first time after 1945, a right-wing extremist party could take power in a German state. This is infuriating for many reasons and self-inflicted harm for those voting for them. Wohoo! In good mapping news, the UN voted 164 to 1 (guess who) to recommend the Equal Earth projection over Mercator, which for centuries has shrunk Africa and inflated everything near the poles. Thank you, Togo! https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/sep/04/un-vote-world-map-mercator-equal-earth-africa Wonder how many UN delegates watched the West Wing episode beforehand. While the real White House is busy renaming gulfs and lakes, in fiction it might have paved the way for fairer maps: https...

This new documentary on Hilma af Klint on ARTE is well worth your time (if you manage French or German). It captures the Swedish artist's visionary position between art, science, and spirituality, featuring insights from experts and relatives alongside early archival footage, and many of her abstract paintings: luminous, diagrammatic, and ahead of her time. I was very lucky to have seen her work in New York in 2019. https://www.arte.tv/de/videos/127034-000-A/das-doppelleben-von-hilma-...

ugh, what a dark coincidence. just listened to this nice radio feature last night on growing recognition of walking, with particular mention of Leipzig, which is trying to make the city more pedestrian friendly while facing perpetual parking violations that obstruct view and passage for people on foot – and now we learn there has been a vehicle ramming into a pedestrian zone, killing two people. https://www.deutschlandfunkkultur.de/schritt-fuer-schritt-durch-die-stadt-die-wiederentdeckung-des-z...

Tonight I attended Dominikus Baur's @dominikus inaugural lecture on "Generative Design and Creative AI" at Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences. An evocative introduction to his field, the role of rules and systems, and the importance of iteration and trimming. Looking forward to following what Dominikus and his students will do in this dynamic field in turbulent times. ‘tis the season to play board games - a good time to appreciate the origin story of Monopoly, which was practically a plagiarized version of The Landlord’s Game by Lizzie Magie: “a brilliant woman economist invented an anti-capitalist board game that was stolen by a lying, opportunistic man and repackaged as capitalist family fun” https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/the-landlords-game/ happy holidays, for those who celebrate and/or play #LizzieMagie #BoardGames

»Tot comença al centre« — everything starts at the center. these are posters for Barcelona's Centres Cívics spring enrollment. each poster shows a head with the face filled with fractal-like patterns. there are 52 such civic centers spread across the city, offering various kinds of courses. publicly funded, decentralized cultural infrastructure. i can't tell how well the offerings are, but the posters sure look great! #Barcelona #CentresCívics #CivicDesign #Illustration #Cultur...

»Tragically, we are failing to avoid serious impacts, and we can now only hope to limit the extent of the damage. We are witnessing the grim reality of the forecasts as climate impacts escalate, bringing forth scenes of unprecedented disasters around the world and human and nonhuman suffering. We find ourselves amid an abrupt climate upheaval, a dire situation never before encountered in the annals of human existence.« https://academic.oup.com/bioscience/advance-article/doi/10.1093/biosci/biae0...

Over the past two summers I had the privilege to co-teach experimental design courses, which not only yielded great projects, but also spawned stimulating discussions and discoveries with our students. To document these kinds of journeys, Philipp @proff and i prepared #SyllabusSite, a template for rendering #Markdown files as scrollable one-pagers that gather readings, inspirations and results in a unique format: https://infovis.fh-potsdam.de/syllabus-site/ #WebDev #InterfaceDesign #FHPotsdam...

we're seeing an undignified debate in Germany right now, sparked by the chancellor's use of subtly racist tropes about cityscapes and safety. instead of stoking resentment, why not seek to understand and appreciate the richness of diverse urban life? i keep thinking of Suzanne Hall's street projects at the LSE, which celebrate urban diversity with simple yet evocative visuals, such as mapping a single street against the world https://newdiversities.mmg.mpg.de/wp-content/...
