Tonight someone started a sentence with "AI has its place, but..." I held my tongue. What I wanted to say was: AI has its place. That place is in the bin.

We've known for decades that binary protocols are less prone to a plethora of issues (not the least of which, security) compared to text based protocols. This was the main impetus for the creation of HTTP/2. So it still irks me that Varlink comes along and says "lol let's put a JSON parser in everything". I mean, c'mon, you could at least use CBOR!

It's been awhile since I sent this around so I think it's time (especially since I haven't posted it since I moved instances).

I learned about THERAC-25 in college. I was also in college when 9/11 happened, and the PATRIOT Act was passed. This might give some insight as to why I am the way I am today.

I feel like there's an opposite of "too big to fail". Maybe "too small for the bastards to care"?

I don't want to go analog. Digital has too many benefits. Making sure I and those I care about are the ones who benefit is the key.

One minor annoyance with JSON -> CBOR: If you feed it a value like 0.8, you'll end up with a 64-bit (8 byte) float. I'd love to see a type for simple engineering notation, eg: 8e-1 would encode the 8 and the -1 in as few bits as possible. I know there's a 16-bit version of IEEE 754 but the precision isn't there. Not sure how high the exponent would need to go to make it worthwhile.

Silly mozilla: [ERROR crashreporter::glean::uploader] failed to send glean ping: process failed (exit status exit status: 7) with stderr: curl: (7) Failed to connect to incoming.telemetry.mozilla.org port 443 after 2 ms: Could not connect to server I guess the ultimate way to avoid being tracked is to go #IPv6-only.

This will likely be incoherent. The beginnings of ideas, hopefully some of which will resonate with someone and we can grow it from there. Starlink is convenient, but every time I see it mentioned I can't help but think of the evilness of Elon Musk and how close we are to Kessler Syndrome thanks to the irresponsible mismanagement of orbit (h/t @sundogplanets@mastodon.social ). We have the technology to improve terrestrial networks in traditionally less connected places. It would take work....

A friend sent me a link to jolla . com last week. I stopped reading after the first mention of "AI". He implored me to continue reading. I counted 5 more instances of "AI" in the first text block and closed it again. I never did make it to anything about the supposed Linux phone everybody is talking about. #NoAI

Came across this bit of #HamRadio nostalgia: https://www.cantab.net/users/john.wiseman/Documents/Commands.htm The document is dated 1993. I probably read it shortly after it was written when I was running the software under DOS.

Despite upgrading to Debian testing with the newest Asterisk and adding an override to the systemd unit for After= the specific network interfaces, it still starts before the IPv6 (or maybe the DNS?) is ready and fails to resolve an IPv6 IAX2 peer. I went back to the old "ExecStartPre=sleep 5s" kludge and it works fine. 🤡

Why differentiated glyphs are important, #hamradio edition: Both of these are US issued callsigns: N0OO NO0O As are both of these: NO0OO N0OOO Does your font make it obvious at a glance they are different? Or does it just all just look like someone screaming in the negative?

Dear Humanweb, I'm hosting a website for a friend who just wants to upload a bunch of music files and serve them. It's currently using Apache's autoindex with some basic styling. I'm in the process of migrating to nginx, whose autoindex module is less flexible. (Yes, I know about fancyindex, but I don't really want to install it for one site.) Is there a simple little program/script/pony that will iterate over a bunch of MP3s in a directory, read their m...
