reaching the limits of my patience w ledger-cli... its an incredible piece of software hamstrung by a bizarre refusal to produce machine readable output. it can only reliably print out human-readable formatted ascii tables that confound parsing and we are trying to generate financial reports from it. it has a "csv" mode that is completely janky and underdeveloped...

progress on the main limitation i encountered and the last bit of big architecture before i can call it "done" for this stretch -- scheduling OFF events. this has proven to be quite tricky as it interacts with renoise column allocation and livecoding in subtle difficult ways. i ended up implementing an "abstract sequence" data structure that is a blend of renoise and uzu semantics to act as an intermediary representation and that seems to have solved it!

here's a chippy little jam on an NES square wave that leans into 8fl's new capability of properly allocating columns and turning off running sounds. read about leaving "space" in a composition and that manifests in 8fl as a bunch of slows (* in tidal mini notation)

deployed a prototype of CUBA https://x.nas.sr/cuba/ it is a livecoding visual thing inspired by my work on the compiler for Larry Cuba's programming language OSKAR https://code.emma.coop/ramsey/oskar

this is fun and came together fast. might polish it up and use it to perform at the livecode.nyc 10th anniversary show 👀

noodled on a little compiler last night thats an implementation of a kind of web version of https://code.emma.coop/ramsey/oskar targeting p5.js. using kdl as the syntax but i will probably write my own parser at some point to get rid of those annoying quotation marks

draft blog post -- with illustrations! https://nas.sr/text/sawa/ this was finished as part of the residency requirements and is phrased accordingly. I think the final version I'll post on my site will be phrased slightly differently and acknowledge the residency. but the substance is more or less locked as a documentation of the first prototype and the core principles 🙏 comments + feedback appreciated

thinking of the general patterns emerging from SAWA and my decentralized git experiments, abstract patterns towards decentralized anarchic democratic decision making.

whoa what if SAWA just stood for "Simple Administration Without Administrators"

https://github.blog/news-insights/company-news/an-update-on-github-availability/ git is a remarkable piece of technology that was designed to be decentralized out of an understanding that centralized systems are brittle and represent single points of failure github effectively undoes the benefits of decentralization. we can do better, the future does not look like this.

preparing a few talks this week and the slide framework i built in 2023 for causal islands is the best one i've put together by a mile. i started on a different thing for my 2025 nyu class that was based on svgs but i think i need to relegate that one to a fever dream. the causal islands system is just based on html and coroutines, extremely simple. proud of me of three years ago 🙏

whoa the merkle tree, the data structure that underlies git history, was originally... patented 😮 https://worldwide.espacenet.com/patent/search/family/022107098/publication/US4309569A?q=pn%3DUS4309569

very good reference I got as feedback on my decentralized document system: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tools_for_Conviviality relevant to people on this server and likely familiar to many but new to me!

had a very successful semi public demo this week! the system held up and worked as expected. we built a collective of 17 people over the course of the evening, all transitively connected to each other through a web of trust. we made and edited 6 documents together. I haven't counted the number of edits but there are about 1700 objects stored in the database so that's the ballpark. extremely grateful and excited for where this is headed!

conversations around this have been super generative, thank you everyone for your feedback 🙏 I think a compromise position that serves people who want to make their own non-browser frontends but preserves the underlying semantics this thing needs without requiring people to get automerge to work in their environments could be: expose the automerge update API over http. so the endpoint I would use in JavaScript would look like PUT /issue/:id where bytes is the automerge blob that comes out o...

found the dispossessed quote i had been thinking of for years: There were no rules of parliamentary procedure at meetings in PDC. Interruptions were sometimes more frequent than statements. The process, compared to a well-managed executive conference, was a slab of raw beef compared to a wiring diagram. Raw beef, however, functions better than a wiring diagram would, in its place — inside a living animal.

whats interesting about petname systems like https://www.inkandswitch.com/backchannel/ is that they mesh extremely well with the arguments i made in 2019 that in order to have a programming experience that did not privilege one written culture over another you had to abandon the notion of "human-readable names" at the level of APIs and libraries. i used the terms "display names" and "canonical names" but the ideas are quite similar. makes me...

i finally have a workable path to livecoding dabke music! the breakthrough came when i found that sofeh studio was released as a vst at some point. that meant i could load it into renoise (via yabridge linux -> windows vst bridge) and livecode it using 8fl and fennel. here is a **very rough** badly mixed jam, popping up the VST occasionally. but it totally works!
