Not sure this is useful for anyone, but Shift Happens is now in collections of Harvard University and Providence Public Library, in addition to 15 previous ones: https://shifthappens.site/#libraries The book was not traditionally published, so most of these acquisitions are because of individual patrons/backers – thank you!

If I play a YouTube video for ~3 seconds and leave, it becomes marked as completely watched, with the red line extending all the way under the thumbnail. It’s been like this forever. Does anyone know if this is a bug, or intentional? It’s frustrating to me. (Apple TV.)

Instant regret of updating CleanShot from version 4 to version 5 and seeing the settings just do all the bad things we hated macOS settings doing a few years ago.

Sort of a random + very specific question: do you know of any composer (social media, CMS, etc.) that allows you to switch accounts in the middle of composing, and remember the text already written?

Random thought of the day: Is there a (UX) design equivalent to this? iykyk

I was hoping for your help with something. Is there a particular font that’s instantly recognizable to someone who lives where you do, and appreciated/recognized/hated there, but completely unknown elsewhere? Something on road signs, street names, transit, infrastructure, stuff like that? I’ll share some examples in the thread. I’d love to learn more about these. I’m not afraid of links in languages I don’t understand, ha. (Also please repost for reach if you are willing!) Thank you!

You know that joke that at every olympics they should start with regular people from the street participating, just so the viewers can truly realize how impossibly hard those competitions are? Today I saw something really cool – an arcade Pac-Man game modded so it starts at the last possible level, 255. You finish it, and the next level is the famous kill screen. I didn’t manage to finish it.

I find these really interesting – this strange hybrid of very old-school displays that only showed a few options, married with vector fonts, but shown as dots, all using pretty modern LED tech.

Aah, there’s this interesting old Zuse/Seifers SM 1 computer with a fascinating-looking segmented display, but I can’t find any other photo than this one. Link: https://archive.org/details/rechnenmitmaschidebe/page/90/mode/2up

I wrote about one of my favourite small big invisible interactions, and a strange design inspiration that stuck with me all the way since the 1990s: https://unsung.aresluna.org/unsung-heroes-repeat-in-excel-97/

RE: https://mastodon.online/@mwichary/116952836351215165 What a fall from grace. I remember Chrome being the browser that tried to protect the users from websites’s bad behaviour. Now the operating system needs protection from Chrome’s.

What the actual hell. Chrome installed a *global* Ctrl+G keyboard shortcut to launch Gemini even if I’m using a different app, and didn’t ask me about it.

Minesweeper on Apple Lisa! That’s pretty cool, just because Lisa had practically zero third-party sofware, and I think absolutely zero games. https://youtu.be/0SnadQGIZtI?si=F5svjFSjjK7uNcJE

Throwback to the Figma user who said “I will give you a million dollars if you build X” (I forgot what it was. Links?) and then he actually sent us a million dollars… sort of.

It I were to review some video playback interfaces on Apple TV, which ones are interesting? (Good or bad.) So far I have native, YouTube, HBO Max, and Netflix.

I know software updates can be exhausting these days. On top of regular weariness of things changing, there’s stuff like Liquid Glass, or thoughtless AI integrations. So, I’m curious: Was there a recent software update you can remember, anywhere, that just made you happy? Something that made an app genuinely better for you, or showed a developer listening to users, or was just plain old delightful?

Here’s a new, super-interactive essay I wrote about making interactions really great for repeated use, motor memory, and so on. I wanted to share things I learned as a designer throughout the years, and highlight some of the nuances and great anonymous work but others, but do it in a hopefully interesting way. Also, I just… love this kind of stuff? I don’t know. My hope is that you’ll fall in love with this, too. *a big screen very, very recommended* https://aresluna.org/show-your-hands-hono...

I know people speak so highly about Flighty, but I almost always see it confused about time in strange ways: the live activity lagging behind reality (telling me the flight will be 30 minutes longer until I switch to the app, and then it becomes correct), suddenly showing stuff like “takeoff 6 hours overdue” when it’s been tracking my airborne flight correctly for 6 hours, and so on. It seems like this should be a core competency. Is this what other people see, or am I just unlucky?

Still don’t quite know what to do with this project, but just updated text.makeup with new Unicode/emoji, SF Symbols, transgender symbols, and a few other things. The most tricky part, however, was adding explanations for Punycode in international domains, because that encoding/escaping is wild and non-linear! Check it out → https://text.makeup

This is kind of random, but I found it funny how I had a whole book named after this key, and up until this week I haven’t been aware that Microsoft once had a whole series of game controllers that came… with a Shift key (or, button), complete with a ⇧ icon. Apparently it did sort what Shift does on a regular keyboard, e.g. you’d press it with another button to change its meaning.
