Last night I find out I’d been added to a Telegram group by mistake — via a contact’s contact from what I understand. And, of all the groups I could’ve possibly been added to, it’s a group of LLM-addicted users, sharing tips but also ‘philosophical discourse’ (not my words). As messages kept coming in, I realised they were discussing how to best, most succinctly define what LLMs are today. I couldn’t resist. I typed: “Neurotoxins”. A swarm of “WTF” ensued, then I got kicked out. 🤣

Upon this twenty-eighth day of August, after but a scant repose, I rose and straightway felt a grievous ache within my back—the lingering ghost of that pilgrimage I made two days agone. My wife did anoint my sore with healing balm, and by degrees the pain did slacken its fell grip. Yet I chose to keep within our walls & rest. Then we ventured forth to purchase victuals as the eve's meal required. By the time the sun did sink, my ailment had all but fled, leaving but a memory of i...

Respecting your readers starts with *not* designing your blog so that the body text is 10-11 px. Why this gratuitous perversion?

I wanted to write something about this particular subject, but this brilliant duo have already said what I wanted to say, and much better than I could. https://buttondown.com/maiht3k/archive/six-problems-with-talking-about-the-ethical-or/

The twenty-ninth of August. The tyrannous heat, which hath held this city in its fiery grip these many weeks, hath at last relented, and doth now but haunt the memory like a fever dream. This morn, I did wander through the pages of art and divers tongues, feasting my mind upon the wisdom of ages. Anon, with my good wife, I did perform the common errands of the day, our baskets filled with the humble necessaries of life. [recto]

I used to have a Protonmail.ch email address. I didn’t check it that often, but now apparently it has vanished into thin air without a single word or warning or heads-up from Proton. (I had a secondary email address associated with it, so they could have written me there).

It’s so very 2026 that I’d like to explore more Linux distros but I have to do *further fucking homework* to understand which ones have their communities infiltrated by fascists and/or AI. I’ll probably just get a Commodore Amiga and go back to AmigaOS.

I empathise with people ranting about stuff. Hell, nowadays I feel I have at least three topics per day I want to rant about. But I implore you, if your rant becomes a TED-Talk-long thread in 32 or more parts, please create a personal blog and post it there too, so that it gets more readable.

‘Software tools are getting shallow and useless’ — I’m paraphrasing a YouTube video I briefly noticed while scrolling my recommendations. I agree. The most popular approach used to be: 1. There’s a distinct lack of applications to do X. (Or: I miss a good app to do X, which I need) 2. I will do my best to develop a tool that does X. I will do my research, sweat the details. 3. The tool is good. Others notice it, happily buy it, spread the word. 4. Profit as consequence of quality. (1/2)

Also, it’s so funny when I’m looking for new blogs to read, and I stumble on personal sites that are all visually super-cool, technically super-code-savvy, brutally responsive, with all the mouseover bells and whistles… …and all this for 7 (seven) blog entries written across the last 12 years.

The Real Story Behind OpenAI’s “Rogue” Model https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0u78gg26vU I love this in the comment section: “They left the car on a slope without the parking/hand brake engaged and now they claim the car went rogue and wanted to run over a person at the bottom of the hill.”

It’s an interesting comparison. I’d argue that, whatever usefulness ‘AI’ has, it’s vastly outweighed by its other pernicious characteristics. https://mastodon.social/@gvwilson/116997366488785600

Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that the European Commission is just targeting American tech companies in the same childish and petty way Trump targets anyone or anything. Isn’t it long overdue that these companies actually *pay* for something, instead of just getting away with anything and using people and resources to just get rich at everyone else’s expense? If it were for me, they should pay even more. These fines are breadcrumbs for them.

So, Spain, the “wasted case”, the place of “bad people” according to Mr Orange Felon, has just won the football world cup in the US. I don’t follow football, I don’t like it. But what I like is schadenfreude.

Hehe, true. Dial-up was ‘barely moving internet’. Imagine stumbling on a website with unoptimised, high-resolution (for the time) images, and imagine seeing them load literally one or two lines of pixels at a time. “I’ll go make a coffee while this loads” wasn’t an exaggeration. 😄 https://social.treehouse.systems/@Elizafox/116849373981630234

If you have a large collection of CDs bought over the years (especially double or triple albums of classical music) and you remember seeing protective foam inserts inside the jewelboxes, go check them and throw away those foam inserts. Because if they’ve degraded and oxidised, your CDs will be irreparably lost. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUq-DIYeIno

Do you want to know what’s one of the Mac apps I miss the most? Mailsmith. If there’s one email client that managed to make me migrate from Apple’s Mail (the email client I’ve used since Day 1), it’s Mailsmith. I had to go back to Mail once it was clear Mailsmith’s development had stopped. I understand that Bare Bones didn’t have enough resources to properly continue to make BBEdit *and* Mailsmith, but it’s a damn shame this email client was left behind.
