The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there. Webcomic choices were slim back in the day. Penny Arcade was one of the more distinct examples, without doing grand story arcs or total edgelord nonsense. Wide appeal, consistent updates, a few viral hits, and you’ve got yourself a pop-culture staple. Something Awful (itself a relic of an earlier internet) had music reviews that asked: was this album good, or was it important? Penny Arcade is decidedly important. Nobody’s plo...

I miss Everything from Windows. It's a file search tool from voidtools, which has instant as-you-type results. It is never out of date because it tracks filesystem events. FSearch simply does not compare.

    > Fix it by giving zero pop-ups before 60 seconds of dwell time or 50% scroll depth. No, never do pop-ups. Choosing when to abuse people with shit that should've died in the nineties is not any kind of "fix." Modal dialogs are a design failure. There's a reason every modern browser has a 'stop this page from generating more notifications' feature, when pages abuse alert().

See also [The Website Obesity Crisis.](https://idlewords.com/talks/website_obesity.htm) > Here’s an article on GigaOm from 2012 titled "The Growing Epidemic of Page Bloat". It warns that the average web page is over a megabyte in size. > > The article itself is 1.8 megabytes long. > The problem with picking any particular size as a threshold is that it encourages us to define deviancy down. Today’s egregiously bloated site becomes tomorrow’s typical page, and next year’...

Researchers went on to state that just ten minutes of using AI made people dependent on the technology, which...

Is this legally distinct from showing a few sentences from whatever website you searched for? Some complaints risk a precedent that amounts to 'search engines are basically piracy.' Like how Google Images used to be friggin' great, and then they had to ruin it because copyright on thumbnails is sooo frigging important that linking to a JPG is a crime. I mean, including AI images would've ruined it eventually, but it could've stayed good for longer!

Optimistically - this is now something backpropagation can reward or punish, to make models of any design act smarter. Pessimistically - when a metric becomes a goal it ceases to be a useful metric.
