@florian @Gargron As I recall, that didn’t really make the universe of Dune more equitable and less exploitative.

@FluentInFinance@mastodon.social They should also have closed loop cooling like with power plants. Make them use cooling towers and/or cooling ponds for the same water over and over rather than steal water for one use.

@Casey@newsie.social But *why*?! Terrestrial solar is absurdly cheap, the cheapest way to produce electricity by far. Panel efficiency and cost are continually improving. Storage tech is getting better and better. And it’s not like we’re running out of land to site solar farms. It’s vastly easier to install, maintain, repair, upgrade, and expand terrestrial infrastructure. (And of course space-based power will still need huge swaths of land for receiver farms.) Like mining lunar Helium-3 fo...

@gregeganSF@mathstodon.xyz Terrific article — thanks for sharing! It reminds me of the discussions as to whether a previous civilization of our technological level would be evident in the geologic/paleontologic record. It’s quite sobering to realize how ephemeral our human-made world is. That said, if we’re really concerned with representing ourselves to a deep future, it may be most reliable to put information about us on the Moon (or Mars), as the article notes their stability.
