'What changed from the abstract, and why' is the most Digital Humanities slide ever. So many presentations sharing honestly what didn't work as expected or yield useful results. This one is by Jiwoo Choi (I think) https://dh-daejeon.vercel.app/abs/65?q=Newspaper (Here, 'bag of words'-style access to a text corpus was no good. Is it too snarky to ask, is it ever any help?) #DH2026 Edited to add light sarcasm and hashtag

In awe of @WScholger mobilising previous @adho conference organisers to help a previous reviewer get information she needed for officialdom. Thanks Walter! [Edit: you'd think I'd be able to get the @adho handle right! But no]

Some quite personal news for long-time followers and personal connections - 9 years after my initial cancer diagnosis, and six years after treatment for a recurrence, the oncology team have officially discharged me. Which is kinda NHS-speak for: I'm in remission! Yay!!

Thoughts on Historical Language Models and Talkie-1930' https://resobscura.substack.com/p/are-vintage-llms-the-start-of-a-new (Probably not, but it does remind me of work in Living with Machines about the wider impact of language about accidents in newspapers)

I love this, from @ryancordell : 'In their discussions of hacking, building, and making, we see that DH scholars do not generally seek to convey simple technological skills, but instead to cultivate technological imagination. Specific platforms, applications, and even coding languages come and go, but a technological imagination is able to abstract a problem—whether intellectual, professional, or personal—and formulate a plan for how a tool or suite of tools might help answer it'...

Susan Brown is the opening keynote for #DH2024 - and winner of the Busa prize https://adho.org/2024/02/21/susan-brown-awarded-roberto-busa-prize/ I'm enjoying her journey through the early days of DH, her many collaborations, particularly around structuring data - which adds weight to her critiques of 'AI' and LLMs vs knowledge graphs / linked data Her slides are at https://tinyurl.com/Brown-MeaningfulConnections

The Digital Humanities 2024 conference is kicking off now, so if that's not your thing, mute #DH2024 The organisers thank the many many proposal reviewers https://dh2024.adho.org/about/other-volunteers/ that make the massive task of reviewing possible (I'm in an overflow room from the main keynote room so I can have a snack while I watch - what a great idea!)

To balance Ted Chiang's essay on AI and art,* there's this from @TedUnderwood - 'In many ways, generative AI is just an extension of a project that the internet started thirty years ago: a project to reorganize knowledge interactively. ... Once we get past the silly-ad phase of adjusting to language models, the effect of this technology may actually be to encourage people to try doing more things for themselves. The risk is not necessarily that AI will make people passive...

'I Was an Enthusiastic Early Adopter of AI Scribes. Here’s Why I Stopped' https://benngooch.substack.com/p/i-was-an-enthusiastic-early-adopter 'When an AI records everything rather than what we chose to record... The note stops being a reflection of clinical reasoning and becomes a verbatim archive. And as a PMC piece on note bloat explicitly warns, this risks obscuring the most medically important information under a volume of equally-weighted detail.'
