It seems like a shipping-address form would be make a good standalone web component. I don't suppose one already exists?

I'm (partly) wrong, the Line Mode emulator still works - and still has a way to load modern sites: https://line-mode.cern.ch/resources/ That's something! But it does lose keyboard focus after each interaction. And I can't seem to load any internal pages - I always end up on the home page of any site I visit.

The #CSSWG just resolved to allow `var()` references in #CSS container queries: ```css @container (inline-size > var(--small)) { .card { padding: 2em; } } ``` The custom property is resolved on the container – so we're querying if the computed value of `--small` on our container: 1. is valid in context (a `<length>` value), and 2. is less-than the container `inline-size` It's not "custom media queries" feature, but it is Damn Close™️ –...

The #CSSWG just resolved to make the `display` property animatable, with non-`none` values given priority during the transition. It's still discrete - there's no intermediate values between `block` & `none` - but this allows toggling it as part of a transition or animation. For example (from @flackr) this would become `display:none` when the transition completes: ```css .hide { transition: opacity 200ms, display 200ms; display: none; opacity: 0; } ``` https://git...

I find the process-vs-outcome oriented distinction misleading. There are so many outcomes to consider, and the process always impacts some of the outcomes, and people just disagree on which outcomes matter. Claiming to be outcome oriented is simply claiming that the current processes don't have different outcomes *that we care about*. When I want a timer, I care about accurate timing. I might also care if the outcome includes burning a forest with exploited labor. Or is that &quot...

What's fun about working on specs is it takes years, and by the end you're still having all the same conversations as you were at the beginning, but with different people.

Every time I've seen someone write CSS with LLM suggestions, they have to delete and change more code than they would have written in the first place. Which to me seems distracting. But is that a way people like working? With constant suggestions? Or do some people (who like CSS and use LLMs) have a different experience? I'm not curious about the tech here - if it "works" or "doesn't work" - I'm curious about developers and pro...

RE: https://toot.cafe/@bkardell/116376015359290397 Enjoyed chatting with PodRocket yesterday about #CSS and #Sass, and how *understanding* the language isn't required to make the background pink – but it will dramatically improve your organizing & debugging. Almost every place devs get stuck, there's an issue with the popular mental model. (And the best approach is usually to do less!)

Sometimes I'm tracking down a questions in the CSS spec, and I land on containing blocks, with my favorite line of spec poetry: "Notably, a containing block is not a box (it is a rectangle)" Yes. That's the sort of distinction I'm here for. https://drafts.csswg.org/css-display-4/#containing-block

There are still absolutely beautiful websites using basic css and html with little or no js. professional web dev has gotten more complex along with specialization, but you can still build personal sites with 20yr old tech. and some new stuff is simpler. What we've lost, it seems to me, is the broad indie pipeline to both learning and socializing (and socially learning). partly because we who learned it 20yrs ago have landed in more specialized/complex jobs.

the more we're all encouraged to optimize our time and deliver more output, the more i want to never hit a single metric again in my life. i want to commit on a project and never launch it. i want to code slower, spend more time choosing colors, re-invent wheels that will never get used - not better, just different - taking as long as possible. i want to spend my time imagining different ways to say a thing, just to enjoy saying it differently. zero output, always only process foreve...

If cool URIs don't change, maybe they shouldn't be managed by landlords and rented on a year-to-year basis. (it seems to me that avoiding link rot should be treated as a platform issue, not a slogan for scolding people who didn't successfully predict the future or treat a webpage as a lifelong commitment)

How do we read the demographics of a survey? How do we know if it's representative of the industry? And how do those questions impact our takeaways? I don't have the answers, but after looking at State of CSS, I have a lot of questions: https://www.oddbird.net/2024/11/04/css-demographics/
