here is a more serious crack at {rustycogs} https://github.com/hypertidy/rustycogs an #RStats package around @developmentseed async-tiff https://github.com/developmentseed/async-tiff this is a good way to learn how COGs are structured, query them from uri, and read per tile, and give some idea what all the VirtualiZarr stuff is about. We need way more R folks looking into this. /1

bit overdue, I made a COG of GEBCO 2025 to save battling their netcdf or zip "geotiff" use /vsicurl prepend, or 's3://idea-gebco-tif/GEBCO_2025.tif' or whatever you prefer https://gist.github.com/mdsumner/c9cfcd49715b2e2925b41222d3d16d2e -> details in this gist to avoid url slop I've asked them in the past to create a COG but no dice, we've been hosting our own copy since 2019

why is it only today I now understand that 1) bash functions can be *pasted* in to a session 2) they run with 'fun arg' and 3) are the same as C/R syntax with {} and ; for lines, or just newlines fun() { local a="$1"; echo "$a"; } fun abc abc I have a colleague who gave this talk once but I was distracted on some spatial code or whatever and I totally vagued on all of it. Now I need that Evi Nemeth wonderful book, those chapters on python...

The documentary film ‘Motherload’ tells the recent development of cargo bikes in America, as safe, effective, sustainable, and resilient way to transport our goods and little ones. It shakes us of the ‘auto-normative’ ways of thinking that many of us grew up with. https://motherloadmovie.com/welcome https://youtube.com/watch?v=6Va-MQbVvpw

#RStats Once in a while, run R CMD check --no-examples and R CMD check --no-tests separately, with _R_CHECK_FORCE_SUGGESTS_=false. The default check ordering plus default Suggests-handling masks bugs that surface only in second-phase code or only when Suggests are absent.

they wrote a geotransform with positive-y in *how much* data? https://cloudnativegeo.org/blog/2026/02/the-technical-debt-of-earth-embedding-products sheesh, an easy thing to have checked lol ... and now, rather than fix the sources they've forced a weird workaround in multiple libs that will confuse more processes and people in future ... #eyeroll

The deeper I get into Zarr and virtualization efforts the bigger the problem seems. There are some huge perspective gaps here, xarray and Zarr reinvented a lot of stuff but then success has prevented a deeper understanding of the landscape. It's like netcdf woke up from the dark ages and half-modernized. 1/
