Thanks Reddit, requiring a login for old.reddit.com has finally freed me from the horrible absent-minded impulse to check what the heck is going on over there.

#HotTake but Privacy is a right, not a virtue or panacea. Providing entirely private spaces to anyone who asks, for free, while controlling the content of that space without any accountability because of that privacy? That's what's feeding so many of our problems these days, political or otherwise. I guess what I'm getting at is that community and openness is also good. It's healthy to give up some privacy and let others look out for you, while you do the same i...

@ThePlant@mastodon.social baseline perf these days is shocking yeah, but you should see these monstrosities a few months before release. No amount of careful optimisation will fix the push from above to avoid screenshots and YouTube videos at 30fps looking even remotely last-gen.

From the Unity 7 announcement: "If your studio has committed to keeping AI out of your creative work—you're not on the sidelines of this release". This is quite disingenuous. From what I've been made aware, Unity internally is going super hard on AI in developing the engine itself - with things like explicitly making devs include how they're using AI in their personal development goals. If you're truly committed to keeping AI "out of your creative work", I t...

Quite a novel way to close a bug... https://github.com/dotnet/msbuild/issues/13594 "Copilot tried to solve this but it got too complicated so what you did (that we recommend you do) is now not supported"

First, Rocket Chat. * Released * Paid after 50 users (nb: a "community" edition exists too) * OSS * Self-hostable * No E2E (nb: has it manually for DMs) * Supports calls * No web client (nb: does have a web client) (nb: feedback in the replies points to rocket.chat perhaps being more viable than I thought) This one had so much promise, but from what I can tell is enshittifying in a similar vein to Discord. Not being free beyond 50 users even self-hosted is weird to me for an OSS pro...

My team at Frontier is hiring! Looking for a mid-level DevOps Engineer. Must be within commute distance of Cambridge (or willing to relocate). https://jobs.eu.lever.co/frontier/478e9414-7f0a-4537-8518-a44db6df7af6 FWIW the job title can be a bit misleading as we're not looking for people with a purely AWS/Azure/GCP cloud devops backround. This kind of DevOps needs people with relevant experience to building, testing and shipping games at scale.

A reminder that "For sale: baby shoes, never worn" isn't the shortest horror story ever written, it's actually "Specifies a tri-state Boolean value" written by the esteemed author Microsoft .NET Documentation.

For the love of god can we stop anthropomorphising LLMs. No, ChatGPT did not "come up with an excuse" or "think about its mistakes". Gemini did not "lie about its reasoning" or "struggle to understand basic concepts". Grok didn't "decide to praise Nazis" or "express it's support for genocide". They're mimics designed cynically to trick you into assigning them a hum...
