So, I've been running my personal instance of ONI for abut 2 years. I follow about 34 other fediverse accounts (only two on mastodon.social). It has stored over this time about 3.2GB of data spread over 345K JSON-LD documents (mastodon.social is responsible for about two thirds of the size) However the thing that's surprising for me the most is that despite the fact that I'm using the least "web scale" storage available - plain files on disk - the instance is still very r...

When I started the work on ActivityPub projects I fully embraced Maslow's Hammer adage. I wanted as much as possible in my services to go through the #ActivityPub vocabulary and I fully embraced the client to server API. But there are elements of a web application that require custom functionality no matter what, say changing a password. So for those I just added the capability of running commands through ssh. :goose_hacker: #ActivityPubDev #fedidev

I'm surprised at how many issues my new integration tests are finding. I already had an integration testsuite, but the way the #fedbox application was run was not in full isolation, and I expect some of the setup steps I had included don't really exist on a fresh install. We now build a fresh container image, start it up, provision it with mock data, and then run tests, but only through mechanisms that are available to a prospective server operator: CLI commands executed through SSH, a...

In my interactions with other go library maintainers I realized I have really strong opinions about how code should look like, and I have a really low patience threshold for explaining why that is. I guess I've been long enough out of the loop of developing in teams, that I'm no longer able to patiently explain why I prefer certain ways of doing things.

@hongminhee@hollo.social like I mentioned in a thread where Evan and Reiver were talking about this, I think having a mediaUpload that has a very similar behaviour to an inbox/outbox, but with one **small** details is a bad API. I would prefer there's either a two step process: upload media first, use resulting token in an object create, or use the outbox with for the binary data upload directly... The first one seems saner to me.

I've started working on generating RFC9421 compatible HTTP-Signatures in #GoActivityPub about a week and a half ago, but it felt more like a month. Writing tests for the client module took the bulk of this time and it was a proper slog. We did manage to increase code coverage from under 20% to 80% plus. This makes it a bit harder to migrate to a new API when the future version 1 of the library will be tagged, but the changes I have planned shouldn't be insurmountable. Now I just need...

I hate how generative AI has taken from me the possibility of taking enjoyment in random art I see on the internet... There's always a niggle of doubt at the back of my mind that it's something produced by a neural network instead of a human. 1/2

@silverpill does Mitra handle this kind of Image object? I forgot how complicated the structure gets: https://marius.federated.id/uploads/storage-pg-almost-done (Basically the client I create these with generates web-optimized versions, uploads them, and then aggregates them into this final Image. Individually they are also valid Image objects.)

Yesterday I made a comment about @thisismissem 's relationship with BlueSky and ActivityPub, and after looking deeper through the links provided in the thread I realized I was in error. It's clear that Emelia had nothing but conciliatory words about the two protocols and I reacted rashly based on a sound-bite taken out of context. I apologise.

@hongminhee it doesn't work with this object: https://federated.id/objects/2e6cf5a8-ffa8-4fca-b4cd-8e0c9a584a75 The way it's meant to be threaded: https://brutalinks.tech/~marius/2e6cf5a8-ffa8-4fca-b4cd-8e0c9a584a75 I suspect this is due to some objects in its replies collection having inReplyTo properties pointing to multiple IRIs. @moreal

@achim@social.saarland so basically after waiting almost three years to see any kind of constructive decision made about my ticket, I think I'm finally ready to accept that Mastodon has no intention of going past their Embrace, Extend and Extinguish approach to the ActivityPub protocol and the fediverse. They shown no intention of supporting the other services in the Fedivserse, and care only about compatibility with themselves.

@steve@social.technoetic.com apologies, I take "server" in the context of ActivityPub discussion to be an "ActivityPub server", not all the other web-servers involved in the process. And when I say "client", I mean a "consumer of ActivityPub", which as you say, many times is also a web server. @smallcircles@social.coop @evan@cosocial.ca

Speaking of #ONI, I can't wait for the Sanitizer DOM API to start making an appearance in mainstream browsers later this month. Currently the biggest chunk of the 140K that make the JavaScript application that comprises ONI is composed of the dompurify library I'm using now to do sanitization of NaturalLanguageValues in #ActivityPub objects.

@toddsundsted@epiktistes.com @reiver@mastodon.social yes, that's a very good distinction. Personally I am also in the camp of "scratching my own itch" kind of development... probably that's what made me comment. And because there's a strong distinction between the two types of open-source efforts, when you address an audience with advice like that, you need to strongly qualify which you're addressing.
