One of life’s many frustrations is finding something small enough to fit in the reset hole. Especially because if you’re reaching for the reset hole, chances are you’re already having a pretty shit time.

Was listening to the PEP podcast recently and they touched on an interesting thought: maybe the increasing unhappiness among younger generations is partly because we don’t really own much anymore. Houses are increasingly out of reach, music, tv shows/movies and software are now subscriptions. The internet is increasingly behind a paywall. Everything is now a sold as a subscription service… We have access to more than ever, but own less than ever. Interesting thought 🤔

1/🧵I'm a bit over the endless review articles and their fancy diagrams telling us that combining #genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, environmental data and AI will revolutionise plant breeding. No shit Sherlock. Of course integrating all those data streams would generate valuable insights. That was never the challenging part. The real limitation is economics 💸 Many breeding programs already struggle to justify the cost of genomics alone. #PlantBreeding

They finally sold it! AGT will take the reins of the national lentil #breeding program. Although most of my career has focused on outbreeding species, one of my side quests was helping establish #genomic selection in this Lentil program back at Agriculture Victoria. Looking back, that was also where I first started experimenting with predictive breeding and multi-generation cross design and haploid values. Which is the hot new thing these days 😉 https://groundcover.grdc.com.au/grdc/announcemen...

Today was another example of the realities of working in a commercial space - where a novel method that you developed internally a few years back, gets independently reproduced and presented on by a research org as a new breakthrough. But that’s a trade off you sometimes have to make to have an advantage over your competitors.

fk sack 😠 NDIS to be targeted again... as a parent with multiple children on the scheme, I can say it has been a lifesaver for us. I would love to see this poll with negative gearing or a wealth tax overlayed, to see where the real motivations of 45-59 and 60+ year olds sit in comparison. source: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04-20/australias-lucky-country-mantle-has-slipped/106581228

Really enjoying the concept of using yaml config files with my #rstats scripts (an idea I took from my r targets pipelines), instead of hardcoding inputs in the script itself, or having inputs and params as command line variables. Makes it easy to move between projects, keeps a record of what was used etc. happy days! 😀
