As political movements go, nationalism has incredible runs on the board for really good music, three hundred years of rousing anthems. The labour-union-socialist movement as well. Anarchism, on the other hand, has one song, one only, yet it is maybe the greatest political song of them all: Tubthumping by Chumbawumba

It used to be a far more common thing, at least until the mid-00s, for singers and rappers to do songs that were just ‘humorous’ lists of different women they’d slept with, but the one group for who would have been most thematically apt—the Beastie Boys—never actually did one? It is notable how quickly after capital’s investments in AI that the phrase ‘learn to code’, in the imperative, a shaming of people left behind by tech changes, has disappeared and almost become the mark of a sucker who will themselves be left behind

The more I read about modern day universities the more I realise I had a humanities education nobody now receives and probably will never receive again. Both large since it was the last hurrah of Dawkins mass teaching, and in person since there was no other way. You could easily reproduce the lecture-tutorial-essay format for small groups at a high cost but why would you? Who would want that? It’d be like training linotype operators or photo lab workers

The Bible is not well known for humour, but the story in Exodus where Moses climbs Sinai to talk to God, receives a ten-point to-do list where no. 1 is ‘no other Gods’, and comes back down the mountain to instantly find the Israelites with a golden calf idol, that has all the elements of a great gag
