Pro Tip: do not update the latest version on anything other than console. Had two crap out on me. This one was the funnier one.

Again, want me to get onboard with your whole "Orbital Data Centers are Good, Actually" thing? Build a bunch on the ground. They only use solar power, use radiative cooling, and communicate using whatever radio you're planning on using. Hell, the cooling and comms should be worlds easier to do. Replace a bunch of your existing data centers with them and have them run for five years without any maintenance or service, only to switch off and degrade into harmless components that are...

Wow, suddenly it's super smokey in #SanJose. Smells a bit electrical. Nothing on WatchDuty, traffic is a mess, so no clear trouble spot, both FlightRadar and airplanes.live aren't showing any air traffic. Wound up pulling AlertCalifornia to see if I can spot any structure fires, but no, it's the whole Santa Clara valley that's socked in. I'm guessing this was probably smoke from the Angel Island burn, but wow, it's thick. (Also, LORA was pretty quiet, so guessing no H...

Sigh. Really going to miss hearing these two on the radio in the summer. Mike Krukow opens up about life in and after baseball — and the first time he met Duane Kuiper

Back in college, I had a Systems Architecture and Design professor. The very first day of his class he stood up in front of us and said: "One day, you're going to be brought in to help optimize a company. You'll see that they're doing things by using index cards in shoeboxes. Then, after you understand their processes, points of interaction, and audits, you'll find out that the most optimal way for them to work is by using index cards in shoe boxes. Walk away." That w...

Privacy isn't dead, even if parts of it were murdered by folk claiming to be protecting us from people who would do terrible things with our information. What they have is your history, not your future.

I am DEEPLY disappointed in you all. I just found out, that due to federal funding cuts, marmot researchers have set up an OnlyFans page*. Today, you can subscribe to OnlyMarms, which promises “Unfiltered yellow-bellied marmot content from the Rockies” delivered as near-daily photos and videos of chubby, personable marmots (with charming names like Staple, Pawprint, and Cabinet) that give Jimothy the raccoon a run for his money. Viewers can leave monetary “tips” on each post, which are split b...

Also a friendly reminder to my northern neighbors that Timmie's is basically Burger King's tax dodge, and that you really ought to support your local Mom & Pop donut shop instead. https://ohai.social/@thatkatharine/117032607273740859

Just heard a radio ad. At the end there were a bunch of hashtags. In a radio ad. "Hashtag jobs Hashtag employment Hashtag baseball" #AdExecHeadInjury

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I am somewhat jealous that you're getting to experience a lot of these artists for the first time, while you're also able to really enjoy them. You are missing a bit of the context for why these folk were so groundbreaking, but just remember, if you think you might have heard them before, it's because so many others stole from them.

So, thinking about the Codeberg "No All AI" code thing... Why would anyone reuse a library or function generated by AI? It's fungible, and can (and probably should) be regenerated. There's no expertise or skill that went into generating that code. There's no tangible benefit other than maybe reducing your token spend. It is, by definition, eminently replaceable. So why should a site like Codeberg provide expensive hosting space for what is, in any practical sense, disposa...

So, yeah, here are some super Fun Facts for folk to consider: The first order of business for any new regime is to oust the prior one.The average tenure for many folk in tech is four years (Some departments, like marketing and executive roles have far shorter tenure.)People hate history because they are smarter and know better, and any historical proof otherwise should be ignored since it’s wrong. The more churn, the less a company stays consistent with any particular guideline or principle (unle...

Debates creating a doorstop bot that says things like "Hooray! I'm holding a door open!" and "The door is now closed. My existence is meaningless", only I know it'd get more followers than I have.

God, how I feel this too. I kind of want to start up a weird collective of folk who just want to create, teach, and just kinda screw around with tech without the extra bullshit. Kind of like that commune at the end of Fahrenheit 451 of people who would recite books to each other or anyone who would listen. https://hachyderm.io/@robpike/116557979937915527

I've had a few fellow software folk tell me that they're thinking about getting out of software because of LLMs. They find them to be tiring as well as deeply problematic for lots of other reasons. I've been telling them that they should do what's best for their sanity, but that they should also stick to software development if they can. Once the LLM fad passes (yes, it's a fad, we're still very much in the Fuck Around stage and the Find Out will produce regulations from...
