incredible mask off moment for the AI industry here with "minimal refusal rates": a tool for laundering what you've already decided to do. you're running it past the chatbot mainly so you can blame it for whatever consequences come. in a very real sense the US military here understands the software better than most of the people working on it.

golf isn't a conspiracy; it's just an outdoor sport like any other, right? sure. it's accessible to the non-rich, more or less. golf courses aren't secret bases for some much more nefarious activity. but also there's a deeper, more nebulous, psychological terraforming effect where it's a way for capital to visibly and legally occupy large amounts of land, consume large amounts of water, etc. and, say, keep it from becoming public parkland.

Look folks the genie is out of the bottle. The genie went from $20/mo to $200/mo. The genie is spending $8 for every dollar it makes. The genie is reactivating every coal power plant it can. The genie needs 60% of your town's water. The genie is hiding $1.65 trillion in debt. But it's out of the bottle! The genie is out of the bottle folks.

another one for the surprisingly large and growing "this isn't true, you're saying it to make yourself sound more impressive than you are, but if it *were* true you'd be a truly abominably evil human being, so you essentially already are evil in addition to being a pathetic grifter" tech guy post archive

starcraft mod where the terrans are hyperscalers trying to build data centers everywhere, the protoss are capturing those data centers and turning them into bitcoin mines, and the zerg destroy and strip the copper from them to build low-wattage mesh networks (feel free to shuffle those role mappings around if they offend your starcraft sensibilities)

particular spot in the middle of your town/city in google street view that's all blurred out, can't make anything of it. you go there IRL and you can't seem to look directly at or walk towards it, like a perfectly curved shape that deflects anything that approaches it.

2028: LLM image generators are nearly totally socially stigmatized since crashing the global economy, but for some reason restaurant owners continue to use it for gross illustrations instead of just taking middling photos of the actual food they make like they did for decades before. this aesthetic spirals off into its own distinct form: increasingly nauseating charbroiled grease fractals bearing little resemblance to anything a human would consider eating.

https://techcrunch.com/2026/07/10/apple-sues-openai-over-alleged-trade-secret-theft of possible interest to bubble watchers, maybe what precipitates OpenAI's downfall is that multiple 900lb gorillas get pissed enough at them and have strong enough legal cases that they all just start suing and the skeletons we all know are there come out in discovery. and maybe Guadagnino's "Artificial" film comes out in the middle of that and craters their public image even further.

last para is a banger: "Indeed, everything about this vision of abundance—from its garbled reading of American history and its paean to industrialists to its pitch to the ultra-rich—is about re-entrenching elite control over politics. All that stands in the way of abundance, apparently, is the people." https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/abundance-movement-yimbyism-big-tech/

RE: https://mastodon.social/@404mediaco/116620394648207824 i don't actually believe people do things like this "without thinking" though. this man was thinking exactly the thoughts that Elon Tesla wanted him to think. they spend a lot of money to get people to believe those things.
