We all know that most young people have no concept of what a filesystem is but today I found out that a lot of them have no concept of copy and paste. They just use share buttons. I think the appropriate emoji for how I feel about this is 💀

I've just finished a challenge for Linux After Dark (episode coming soon) so that means I can install any distro I want on my X270 (ThinkPad). It's not a very powerful machine but it's good enough to watch YouTube while I'm cooking etc. So, what should I install on it?

When I was a little kid I had this neighbour guy. Probably about the age I am now. I was friends with his kid and we used to play Amiga games etc. I think he was an engineer who worked on industrial machinery or something. He was certainly very handy. He always had at least 1 or 2 shitty old cars on his driveway. The local older kids used to spread rumours that he would drive them around at night as hard as he could to break them, just to have something to fix. That's me and computers now...

Once upon a time if you were in the UK and you searched for "Los Angeles weather" on Google, you'd get the current weather with the temperature in sensible celcius. Add "f" to the end and Google was smart enough to give you the temps in freedom degrees (useful for talking to friends in that area). I just tried it and just got AI slop about the average temperatures in March. We need to rewind the whole tech industry about 5 years and just start again. This time without t...

In which we find out for sure that Torvalds doesn't care about the ethics of "AI". Cool. The future is really great. https://www.theregister.com/ai-and-ml/2026/07/15/linus-torvalds-tells-ai-haters-to-fork-off/5271894

If you are in a position in your job/career where you feel compelled to use generative AI through fear of losing your livelihood then you have my deepest sympathies. I hope it gets better for you at some point really soon.

I don't know why people are surprised when they find out that successful businesses are run by fash-adjacent people. Running a business ethically is really fucking hard, believe me. I've had to make really bad business decisions like: + not mixing ads and content on my podcasts + turning down some ad deals + refusing to allow invasive tracking of listeners + not implementing dynamic ads because of said tracking If I was good at business shit I'd make different decisions on all of...

I think I was wrong about Angine de Poitrine. I was put off by their silly costumes but I suppose in this day and age you need to do that kind of thing to get noticed It's not the sort of music I'd choose to listen to regularly, but on reflection, I appreciate the art of it. I worry that they are a one trick pony but if they aren't, they could end up being pretty significant in the story of western music In case you aren't aware, this is the nonsense I'm...

Funny how AI bros never name their bot Dave and treat it like a new friend. Their mate Dave. Instead they give it a woman's name and flirt with it. Very odd behaviour.

I've got quite a few Raspberry Pi boards, including an original one that I bought at @oggcamp in 2012. I think it's fairly rare because it only has 256MB of RAM. Anyway, I decided to see if it can actually do something useful so installed Pi-hole on it. Although it's quite slow when I have to ssh in and deal with config, the web interface is pretty responsive. I've been using it on my phone for a few hours but it's absolutely fine. So maybe the Pi 1 is a...

I've got this great idea for a comedy bit right. I'm gonna sound like Trump and say stuff. I'll just repeat myself loads and use as many superlatives as possible. I'm sure no one else has thought of this.

There are so many things to love about the Fediverse. My current favourite is that the people who managed to work out how this thing works generally tend to agree that "AI" is a force for bad in the world.

I could use AI to edit my podcasts. As well as the ethics, the reason I don't is because it wouldn't save me any time. I'd still have to go through and check everything, and fix the small mistakes it made. People who say AI saves them time at work (coding for example) must not be thoroughly checking the output and fixing the small mistakes. Or maybe I'm missing something here. 🤷‍♂️
