"The power bank that caught fire aboard a KLM plane on Thursday, forcing it to turn around after 5.5 hours in the sky, belonged to Camiel Eurlings, the former CEO of KLM, multiple passengers on board the flight confirmed to RTL Nieuws. The former KLM CEO was charging his power bank, against KLM’s rules, when it exploded." presented without comment

I'm sorry why is this code working

growing real tired of slopcoding tools writing every code comment like bad poetry just tell me what the fucking thing does, piss off with your metaphors and 'creative' (but mysteriously always the same) sentence constructions

half-baked idea: FOSS project that only provides free support (eg. in issues) to non-commercial users, requiring a support contract for commercial users, and you agree that if you are discovered to (secretly) be acting on behalf of a commercial user, the company behind it will receive an invoice per ticket

I kinda missed this but apparently the EU Right to Repair stuff adds a year onto your warranty when a device is repaired under warranty?? that might sound trivial but that's actually an *extremely* significant change that has very real implications for some of the shadier (but common) cost-cutting practices in the industry, because it means manufacturers can no longer just design exactly to warranty spec now I'm just left wondering if that repeats on every repair or not

if there's one thing I've learned after 20 years of programming it's that nobody checks *anything* you can just... say shit. make wild claims about performance or security or maintainability or even cost savings. and nobody will check. ever. companies will make million-dollar engineering decisions and still never check any of it. if I got a nickel for the amount of times I investigated a completely unquestioned claim made by the owners/creators of some popular-at-the-time technolog...

since nobody medical seemed able to answer "how are you supposed to keep your meds at under 25 celsius in a heatwave" when I asked them a while ago, here's the answer that I've figured out by now: you use an insulated bag. you know, the kind that you'd use to keep your drinks and food somewhat cool when going out for a trip or a picknick or whatever. not an active cooler, just the passive insulated bags. blow <25C air into them at night when things have cooled down (or...

There is no meaningful difference between "border security" and the idea of "one group primitively kills another group when they enter their territory". We've just dressed it up in institutional language and outsourced the cruelty to those who like doing it, so that we don't have to watch it happen and can pretend it doesn't. So that we can pretend it is 'humane' and 'reasonable'. Just like I'm sure every group historically made up some moral...

there's a really interesting correlation I've noticed, which is that the people complaining about the codeberg AI decision almost invariably demonstrate that they don't understand the concept of a member association they call a vote a 'survey', or they describe it as a choice from 'high on up', or they describe codeberg as a 'company' or 'business', or they complain that as a (regular) user they weren't asked for their opinion, or they come up wit...

Oh, so when the Internet Archive digitizes a book and makes multiple high-fidelity copies available to actual readers, it's grounds for a lawsuit that threatens to destroy the whole organization, but when fucking *Anthropic* does it to extrude infinite slop from it, it's fine??? Genuinely, fuck the whole US legal system

I think folks should be a lot more concerned about the aggressive response towards Codeberg from AI bros, than they currently are. Not because of the disagreement, or even the "AI" itself, but because Codeberg is simply too small to critically matter to anyone's functioning or livelihood - it's a small community project! - and so the extreme intensity of the response says a lot about the true motivations and expectations of the "AI" crowd, particularly around power....

I think the idea of Wayland is fucking fantastic, and I *also* think that the people working on it (I don't just mean the core protocol folks) fucked up thoroughly by rolling it out as a default without first ensuring that already-used functionality wouldn't break and without making an unopinionated Wayland server along the lines of riverwm available in documented form off the bat, because now everybody knows Wayland as "that thing that broke my system and doesn't work the same...

I really have difficulty understanding the thought process of the "IPv6 is useless" crowd. Like, how on earth did you get to that conclusion?

  • View post

Okay, so Armin Ronacher definitely goes on the 'slopbro' list, good to know. If you run an AI company and then criticize a slop ban without even acknowledging that it was the members who voted on it and instead imply it was a decision 'from up high', then it's pretty clear what your intentions are.

I've republished to Codeberg my ca-incidents list, a permanent record of security/trust incidents involving SSL/TLS Certificate Authorities, because continuous scrutiny is important for the trust in the system: https://codeberg.org/joepie91/ca-incidents It hasn't been updated in quite a while (last update was in 2016), and I'm sure that more things will have happened since, so please submit a PR if you know of any incidents to add! #ProjectToot #TLS

Hey, everybody? I get that it's frustrating when Codeberg is down. But please remember that it's a community project, and that the expectation of "everything is up 100% of the time" was created by exactly those tech companies that were killing off communities for the past 20 years. 100% uptime was never true before Facebook/Google/etc. came around, not even close. And it's even more difficult to keep things up nowadays; there is *so much more* malicious traffic coming from...

"There's no such thing as a free lunch" and "if it's free, you're the product" are both terrible phrases to live by, because they don't reliably help you identify exploitation, they don't help you understand how the power dynamics of it work either, *and* they erase community organizing in the process. They're only a "good rule of thumb" if you look at them in an extremely narrow context that hasn't existed for most of the time you'v...

Something that I didn't realize wasn't universally known, but it apparently isn't. That idea that you're being "left behind" or "staying in the stone age" if you don't start using AI? It's not real. I know that it feels real, and like it's everywhere around you, but it's not. You are intentionally being made to feel this way. This is a propaganda technique that was perfected in the cryptocurrency/NFT industry, using FOMO and peer pressure to...
