US folks anywhere to the left of George Bush have this habit of talking about the south in the same way right wingers talk about cities. It would be more productive if we could not do that

nerd question: can you think of an example of Star Wars having faster-than-light sensors of some kind? There is plainly FTL travel and communications. But, can they _see_ faster than light, for want of a better term?

I don't understand how we managed to collectively concede the claim that AI is good at generating code. I've seen the code they generate. I've worked on the code they generate. It's horrifying.

Corrected headline: OpenAI uploaded hundreds of malicious packages to public repository, claims it was an accident and can't be prevented Subhead: we gave them a trillion dollars so they could do this https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/sep/11/openai-agents-rubygems-malicious-packages

The Starbucks union is calling for a boycott. You can help your fellow laborer merely by signing the boycott pledge, to give them just a little bit more leverage in their negotiations https://www.boycottstarbucks.net/ (Yes, i know the coffee is mid. And yes, I too stopped eating there some time ago. I still signed the pledge, and you should too)

I'm 6 weeks into lifting big weights at the gym, and I feel like I may be running out of fast linear progression, which I'm not thrilled about. I was rather enjoying lifting 5 more pounds every time I stepped up to the bar. But I'm not just breezing through recovery like I had been 😕 Anyway, I deadlifted 205 today. Which is very cool. But, 100kg (220.5 lbs) is a nice round number, and is thus much cooler. If, I can keep up this progression, that would be next Friday 🤞 but i guess we...

dear every website, ever: I am not blocking ads. I am blocking trackers. Not even all tracking, either. Just tracking by third parties. That you can't tell the difference is the whole problem. Thank you for coming to my ted talk

re: LB It's been obvious to me for years that AI chatbots were an assault on expertise. (also labor, sense making, knowledge, art, artists, and so on. But, also expertise) But I didn't forsee it being so effective on software developers. Our bosses, sure. And our coworkers who see themselves as temporarily unfunded startup founders, obviously. But not wide swathes of free software maintainers. And not the kind of devs who just write code for a living because they learned to do it and i...

Getting access to barbells means I can lift big heavy* weights. Which in turn means I have realized that I only _thought_ I was getting a lot of protein. So now I want to be _sure_ I'm getting a lot of protein. Sooooo I started tracking my food again. It's not my favorite thing. Eating what I want without thinking about it was my favorite thing. But, getting >200g of protein per day just on vibes wasn't going to work like I wanted, either 🫤 *it's all relative, but I did dead...

In February last year, I put together a home lab server because I thought it was likely that new laptops would become unavailable in the US at some point. So, I find it deeply satisfying to see AI fans moan about how they can't possibly run local models while I'm sitting on a half terrabyte of RAM that's mostly just seeding torrents and streaming my movie collection to my TVs. Or literally anything but hosting a self-delusion factory

@beep@follow.ethanmarcotte.com > While this sense of having a “partner” enabled a feeling of momentum, the reality was a continual switching of attention, frequent checking of AI outputs, and a growing number of open tasks. This created cognitive load and a sense of always juggling, even as the work felt productive. I suspect this almost throwaway paragraph explains A LOT about the disconnect between people's self-reported productivity and the actual outcomes of delegating work to chatb...

I spent most of my free time over the last several days writing a pokemon book for my kid, starring my kid. He's super into pokemon, and so we got him a bunch of old scholastic pokemon chapter books. He really likes when we read them, but they're still a little too advanced for him to read on his own. So I wanted to give him something smaller and easier. Plus, he gets to be the hero. Anyway, I've repeatedly thought about Sam Altman claiming he would be unable to parent...

Question for fedi art nerds: if i wanted to spend around $400 on a graphics tablet for casual use under linux (fedora/gnome/wayland, unless I really really really had to change, and even then it would be a vm), what are the good options? Other considerations: this will be mostly couch use, portable is better, 14-16" is probably the right size, and I've gotten accustomed to hardware that just works

Watching people try to "debug" coding agent behavior is so unbelievably painful. It's just fucking magic incantations Did you use this specific super power? Did you ask it to explain itself? Did you read it's thought process to see where it's getting overwhelmed? No because none of that is real. It does not do any of those things. It confabulates statistically probable text, and it does that over and over until a control loop stops asking for more....

Did you know that if you lift heavy objects, you get stronger? Bodies are weird Anyway, I just had the very strange experience of finding it easy to curl 45 pound dumbbells. For a bit, anyway. It wasn't easy anymore after I did it 20 times. But still, very strange and cool
