Lean and systems thinking has much to say about the impact of batch size on queues, lead times and throughput. Viewed through the lens of Feedback Latency, though, we see a potentially much bigger impact. https://codemanship.wordpress.com/2026/07/15/feedback-latency-learning-productivity/

Apologies. We would have shipped the software sooner, but we were too busy guessing what you need.

Do the maths - error-free long-horizon agentic programming requires quality gates so good that I seriously doubt the capability of anybody to even get close.

The median salary of a software engineer at Tesla is ~£220K. Employment costs roughly 2x the salary in the US, so $200/week is about 2.5% of the total cost of an engineer. AI, the bean counters just put a value on you.

I've just invented the term "dominant priors" for when probabilities in an LLM "shout louder" than those calculated from the context, so the model "wins" over the information you give it e.g., when it uses out-of-date API documentation even after you gave it new docs Main cause: attention dilution

You say: "LLMs write great code" I hear: "Phil Collins is a great drummer"

I see more and more "Now that we can build a proof of concept in an hour..." takes on product and UX design. They're missing something very important about feedback. https://codemanship.wordpress.com/2026/06/20/the-solution-to-bduf-isnt-faster-bduf/

The biggest datasets from outfits who are in a position to collect hard data from real dev teams, like Faros and CircleCI, show beyond any reasonable doubt that the *average* team that uses AI for code generation is outperformed in software delivery by the average team that doesn't. True story.

Even when it's just you and your customer, software development is ultimately a collaborative pursuit. The *illusion* of individual productivity can be seductive, and often harmful. https://codemanship.wordpress.com/2026/05/26/in-teams-individual-productivity-is-a-harmful-illusion/

Going AI-first without solid engineering foundations is a bad idea. It should be foundations first, AI last. Otherwise you'll never find the time to build them, and the engineers who could help won't look at you twice.

This morning's TDD training workshop turned into a coaching session, as it was just the 3 of us in the end. Good fun! The final Test-Driven Development workshop for self-funding learners is on Tuesday June 2nd at 18:45 BST (GMT+1), still spaces left. https://www.tickettailor.com/events/codemanship/2131015

RE: https://mastodon.cloud/@jasongorman/116618638310534377 This is the course your teams need on AI-assisted software development - engineering foundations first, *then* AI.

When I say "Continuous Delivery", it puts people in mind of continuous integration, build and deployment automation, pipelines, and all that DevOps stuff. But at the core of CD is our ability to keep code shippable at any time, and that's very much a "you" thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmtxONcvpnU

It's really interesting how many posts about AI-assisted and agentic coding don't mention users or user feedback. Like, at all. It's rarely cited as either a goal or a constraint.

Sigh. Growing talk of "software factories" again. They're not factories, they're laboratories.

While I can still afford the tokens, I'm running a closed-loop experiment this morning to measure the difference in results between 2 approaches to prompting: 1. Explicit negation ("Don't do this") 2. Leading by example (show an example of what you want) 2 is winning by a country mile

Still space left on June 2nd evening's Test-Driven Development workshop for self-funding learners. Accelerate release cycles and shrink lead times without sacrificing quality. No hype. Just stuff that works. Just £99 + VAT. Last time at this price Register -> https://www.tickettailor.com/events/codemanship/2131015

This is the training your team *really* needs on AI-assisted development. Engineering foundations first, *then* AI. Or let the code-generating firehose overwhelm the bottlenecks in your process and turn production into a perpetual dumpster fire. Find out more -> https://codemanship.co.uk/codecraft.html

I've joked about the possibility of human experts ending up being the better *and* the cheaper option to LLMs, but I also kind of meant it.

A handful of tickets left for tomorrow's Test-Driven Development workshop aimed at self-funding learners. 18:45 - 21:00 BST. Live, instructor-led training that goes beyond the basics of red-green-refactor. (And there's another one on Saturday morning) https://www.tickettailor.com/events/codemanship/2131015

My workshops for self-funders on Specification By Example in May are filling up nicely, but so far entirely with devs. Product managers, testers, UX designers and other non-programming software folks are very welcome. I'm hoping for cross-discipline groups. I even made a spiffy ad and everything. And, of course, devs are still welcome 🙂
