One of my pet peeves about Redis is that the documentation is often aspirational. And by that I mean it would be great if it worked that way but it doesn't. For example, the `JSON.NUMINCRBY` command says it returns a string or an array containing ints/nulls depending on which JSONPath type you use. Not only does it return the same type in both cases, but it isn't either of these. https://redis.io/docs/latest/commands/json.numincrby/

The AI code-review bot my company uses just wasted 2 hours of my time. It reported a bug in cache logic in a PR. I didn't change caching, but it's a Rails app so unexpected invalidations and indeterminate staleness can both happen. Report said it doesn't invalidate properly, so I investigated but couldn't find the bug. It was talking about the fact that these cache entries can be stale for up to 2 minutes, which is intentional. There's even a comment abou...

I installed Google Meet on my phone because I need to run an errand but I need to listen in on this meeting. The app has now asked for access to not only my camera and mic, which are reasonable in a video-chat app, but also location, contacts, and *fitness data*. What the proverbial fuck?

An LLM is conscious in the same way that the sex worker you hired really likes you. That is, it's not, they don't, and the whole thing is just a fantasy.

Using Rails system tests always seems to reinforce my position that that Rails system tests are a bad idea. "But they validate a whole workflow!" They validate only the hopes and dreams of the person that wrote them and carry a misguided expectation of deterministic execution that ends up blocking everyone when that expectation is wrong.

Looking at the current state of the tech industry, it's absolutely wild to remember that there was a whole decade where people would say "You're a developer? Don't say that too loud, someone might try to hire you!"

I just remembered this email I got from Reddit. I was living in Australia when signed up on Reddit, so they wanted to let me know that if I'm under 16 I won't be able to use Reddit anymore. The funniest part about it is that, not only have I not even set foot in Australia in over 10 years, but they also know I'm over 16 because *the account itself* existed for more than 16 years when they sent the email.

Fiancée is trying to switch CRMs at her new company, but their current CRM doesn't let you export data. I looked them up and they have a REST API, so I wrote a script to pull down all the data from their API and transform it from JSON to CSV so she could upload it to the new CRM. Took about an hour.

I'm looking into slow page loads in the hot path in my company's core app. It makes generous use of caching but, for business reasons, they want fresh data. So the cache is invalidated several times per minute for something that takes 10 seconds to render.

In the GitHub pull request UI, you can suggest patches in a review comment. There is an "Apply suggestion" button underneath that patch inside the comment. Now that my coworkers are all AI-pilled, when I put together a patch for someone's branch in code review, rather than simply clicking that button to apply the patch that I carefully constructed for them, they tell an AI agent to write the exact same code.

It shouldn't irritate me this much when someone says something so confidently and they're just wrong, but it really does. Not like a lie. Surprisingly, that bothers me less. I mean when someone truly believes something they just cooked up in their mind and you already have *mathematical proof* that they're wrong. Like, where does that confidence come from? I legitimately don't get how someone can be so confident about something they clearly don't underst...

GitHub has become so unreliable that, even if AI were making engineers significantly more productive, those productivity gains would be wiped out by GitHub's own failures. I spent most of yesterday tracking down an issue I thought we had with our CI and it turned out to be GitHub's merge queue was just stalled.
