“Responding to a user who wrote that ‘every year I’m sad to learn that next season won’t be the book where he kills his way through a white supremacist militia camp,’ Ritchson explained that the novel (titled ‘Die Trying’) is his ‘favorite book.’ ‘Fun fact: I had it approved until someone got re-elected.’” https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/alan-ritchson-jack-reacher-novel-die-trying-1236870453/

I’m not sure why anyone ever bothered making another movie trailer after they made this one for BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (1970). Because how on earth do you top this https://youtu.be/cif6XNH5sKM

“There is one particularly notorious war game from 1979, the Campaign for North Africa, a board game so detailed, complex and cumbersome to play that it is thought that no one has ever actually finished it (including its creator). “Now two guys from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, are trying. James Purcell and Andrew Taeger have spent nearly two years just mastering the rules and practicing, and they are ready to start playing the game for real. Finishing it could take decades, if it doesn’t driv...

Noticed in my local pharmacy today that they were having an absolute wall-to-wall, full-court press to get people to take the new flu vaccine. Signage everywhere; the point-of-sale system asked me if I wanted to schedule a flu shot; so did the pharmacist. When I said I’d prefer to get one later, the pharmacist set up a text message reminder for me. Just a real effort from everyone to make sure I knew there’s an updated flu vaccine and convince me to get it. I was impressed. There’s also an upda...

Incredibly depressing that the people who write headlines for PC Gamer these days assume their readers wouldn't know who Raph Koster is https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/game-development/industry-vet-who-worked-on-ultima-online-says-the-next-big-thing-needs-to-have-sh-tty-graphics-to-escape-the-doom-of-rising-development-costs/

"Why is Donald Trump so hot and bothered for the Fed to lower interest rates?" Donald Trump is at heart a real estate con man. Real estate con men take their marks for sums of money large enough that the marks usually have to borrow it. Low interest rates mean money is cheap to borrow, which makes life easier for real estate con men. To a real estate con man, low interest rates mean good times. (For them, anyway. The mark gets busted out, but the con man doesn't care about that.)...

"In the ’90s, you had a lot of people entering the [tech] scene who came from other places—by which I mean they’d actually read a novel that wasn’t Tolkien, they’d actually been to a museum and not just seen really bad CGI art, they had truly diverse backgrounds. I see much less of that now. You see people who started coding when they were in fifth grade, that’s all they’ve ever done, and they have no context or background to frame the other things they hear." https://slate.com/techno...

I should probably note here that gripes about news stories being behind a paywall are a real gear-grinder for me, because: 1. I can't do anything about it 2. If you're on fedi, you probably know how to get around a paywall 3. Reporters who break stories deserve to get paid, and paywalls are the only way anyone's found to make that work reliably

So it turns out the fridges and freezers in military base commissaries across the U.S. are connected to the Internet, and some hacker has been putting them into defrost mode and letting the food spoil https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/08/28/dod-confirms-refrigeration-disruption-at-military-commissaries/

The crazy thing about this kind of capitulation is that it's happening in August 2026. The last time we went around this particular bend was in February 2025, with the "Gulf of America" stupidity. I didn't like the way the mapping companies fell in line with that, but I could understand it. Trump had just won re-election, he was swinging his power around wildly, and it was unclear that anything could stop him. Who wants to be the first one to walk into a buzzsaw? But that wa...
